Satchit Balsari, MPH, MD

Biography

Dr. Balsari is Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine and Director of the Global Emergency Medicine Program at Weill Cornell Medical College / NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. His interests are focused on the development of pre-hospital care, emergency medicine and community-focused disaster mitigation methods in low-income settings.

Dr. Balsari trained and worked at the Program on Humanitarian Crises at the Harvard School of Public Health from 2001 to 2004. As a graduate of Grant Medical College, and a resident of Mumbai, he has experience working with children in the aftermath of natural and humanitarian disasters in India, including the Bhuj earthquake of 2001. He served as a consultant to the American Red Cross public health team in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina, and worked with the FXB Center to investigate the state of the children in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake in 2010. Through the Global EM Program, he has worked and taught extensively in several cities in India, Sri Lanka, the UAE, Qatar, Montenegro and Haiti. He also helps coordinate the Program's projects in Tanzania and Lebanon. Annually, he directs the Global Health Emergencies Course aimed at domestic and overseas health care providers engaged in international public health.

Dr. Balsari serves on the founding steering committee of the Global Health Working Curriculum at Weill which oversees the implementation of a four year longitudinal teaching program for medical students interested in global health. He is visiting faculty at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, and the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights, guest editor at SouthAsiaDisasters.net, and a peer reviewer for the Annals of Emergency Medicine, and the Emergency Medicine journal.
