Biography

Robert Campbell is a Chartered Architect with 30 years experience in private practice and local Government.

Robert attended Thurso High School in the north of Scotland prior to being accepted to Scott Sutherland School of Architecture in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1970. He completed his further education studies in 1977 prior to working with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority and Warrington New Town Development Corporation in England until 1981.

Robert moved to Glasgow in 1981 and briefly worked with the Common Services Agency (Scottish Health Board Design Division) before joining EC Riach Architects until 1991. During his employment with EC Riach he became an Associate in 1984 and a Partner in 1986. Over the 10 years he spent with EC Riach the firm increased from 3 to 40 with work including social housing, retail parks, offices and conservation of listed buildings.

In 1991 Robert formed Campbell and Morris Associates Chartered Architects expanding from being a Sole Practitioner to a partnership with a total of 15 staff. Project work included social housing, health care, non food retail and conservation of listed buildings.

During this time Robert became involved with the Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) becoming Convenor of the Practice Committee at the GIA and Practice Board Convenor at the RIAS for 5 years. Robert is currently a Council member with the RIAS.

Robert is also involved in education and is an RIBA Part 1 and 2 examiner with the Architect’s Registration Board (ARB) and Part 3 examiner with the Architects Professional Examination Authority in Scotland (APEAS) and Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) North Western Region in the north of England. He has also been involved in validation board visits of schools of Architecture in Scotland and England. Robert is also visiting Lecturer in Professional Practice at Greenwich University and previously ran a construction law course at Cardonald College in Glasgow.

Robert has sat on various external Committees including Glasgow Buildings Preservation Trust and SHIELD chaired by Communities Scotland the main grant funder for social housing in Scotland.

When the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) came into force in 1994 Regulations Robert became a member of the Association of Planning Supervisors (APS) and was commissioned as a Planning Supervisor on projects from £50,000 – £20 million. This role continues as a CDM Co-ordinator following the introduction of amended CDM regulations in 2007. He also gained specialist accreditation in conservation with the RIAS in 1999 and was appointed to the RIAS panel of Adjudicators in 1998 dealing with disputes in the building industry substantially involving Architects.

Robert resigned his partnership in 2007 to concentrate on specialist consultancy work including Arbitration, Adjudication, Expert Witness, Client advice and Education.

Robert’s personal interests include Golf (member of Turnberry Golf Club, hosting the 2009 British Open Golf Championship) rugby, cinema and reading.
