Biography

Richard E. Scranton, M.D., M.P.H., Director Projects Massachusetts Veterans Affairs Epidemiology Research Information Center (MAVERIC), received his MPH with a concentration in clinical epidemiology from Harvard School of Public Health and completed the Harvard Faculty Development Fellowship. He has been a member of the MAVERIC research staff for 4 years. He serves as an associate physician at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Division of Aging and an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Scranton conducts pharmaco-epidemiologic research and health services research using VA administrative files as well as epidemiological research using a variety of large cohorts. His research focus includes cardiovascular and chronic diseases epidemiology and health services research. In addition, he serves as the PI of a large VA and Non-VA randomized clinical trial of a new investigational treatment for Type 2 Diabetes.

Dr. Scranton is active clinically where he co-manages a preventive cardiology clinic in the Boston VA Healthcare System as well as serving as the attending physician in the advanced diagnostic and treatment center.

As an internist in the Navy, Dr. Scranton developed several specialized clinics to optimize patient care. He developed a multidisciplinary congestive heart failure clinic, a lipid clinic, and an obesity clinic. In addition, he established an ambulatory pharmacy clinic within the Department of Internal medicine. These clinics were patient focused with the use of allied health professionals to assist in improving health care delivery. Other initiatives included programs to screen for depression and dementia. He now continues these innovative efforts in the newly developing comprehensive treatment and diagnostic clinic for the elderly for the Division of Aging.

Dr. Scranton continues his teaching efforts as an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School where he teaches a course on Nutrition and Prevention to Harvard Medical Students. As Co-Director of the Special Ambulatory Care Fellowship Program at the Boston VA Healthcare System, he is responsible for mentoring four Ambulatory Care fellows in the Harvard General Medicine Fellowship Program. Additionally, he mentors two preventive cardiology fellows. Dr. Scranton serves as course faculty for the Clinical Effectiveness Program at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Since the start of his career, Dr. Scranton has devoted much of his time to the education of medical students and fellows. He has developed curriculum and several new innovative clinical pathways. His avid desire to teach is evident by his experience as a preceptor and lecturer. During his short academic career, he has given over 100 invited lectures throughout the country.
