Biography
John W. Winkelman, M.D., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Medical Director of the Sleep Health Center of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Winkelman received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in Psychobiology and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He finished a residency in Psychiatry and a fellowship in Neurology (Sleep Disorders Medicine) at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Winkelman has conducted research in Restless Legs Syndrome and Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, Insomnia, sleep disorders in psychiatric patients, parasomnias, especially Sleep-Related Eating Disorder, and the effects of psychotropic medications on sleep quality and architecture. He has also developed and directed multiple undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical education courses in the areas of sleep disorders and biological psychiatry.
Dr. Winkelman serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation, is past Chairman of the Nosology Committee for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and is chair of the treatment guideline committee for Restless Legs Syndrome of the American Academy of Neurology.
