Biography
John McCarthy is President of Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc. (EH&E), a private engineering consulting firm based in Needham, Massachusetts, specializing in development and implementation of environmental and occupational health management systems. Dr. McCarthy holds a B.S. in biology from Boston College, an M.S. in industrial hygiene and environmental health sciences, and a Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) in environmental science and physiology, both from Harvard University. Dr. McCarthy is an American Board of Industrial Hygiene certified industrial hygienist.
Dr. McCarthy has managed a variety of multidisciplinary studies for hospitals, schools, and corporations. These investigations have focused on building design and performance and their influence on chemical, particulate, and microbiological contaminants in the environment. A particular focus has been developing evidence-based guidelines of environmental controls for healthcare facilities. Dr. McCarthy has also been extensively involved in helping define the parameters of sustainable design and incorporating them into high performance buildings.
Dr. McCarthy has authored more than fifty technical papers and book chapters and co-edited the IAQ Handbook (McGraw-Hill 2000), a comprehensive reference for building owners and managers regarding indoor environmental concerns. Dr. McCarthy chaired IAQ 2004 Critical Operations: Supporting the Healing Environment through IAQ Performance Standards, a joint ASHRAE/ASHE conference held in Tampa, Florida.
