Biography
Over a 26-year career dedicated to healthcare, Jeff Margolis has earned broad recognition as a futurist and advocate for the innovative application of information technology to all areas of the American healthcare industry. Jeff spends considerable time every year leading the discussion with other industry executives for the best course to a more efficient and effective healthcare system. Currently, Margolis is helping the industry understand Integrated Healthcare Management, a new model for improving the coordination of benefits and care for consumers.
A systems scientist and information technologist by training, Jeff has spent his entire professional career architecting information technology systems and services for some of the nation’s largest and most innovative healthcare organizations. Currently, The TriZetto Group, which Margolis founded in 1997 and served as its Chief Executive Officer through July 2010, is the largest supplier of software and related services for the healthcare insurance industry. Its technology touches half the insured population of the U.S. and TriZetto is the most trusted choice for many payers, including more than two-thirds of the nation’s BlueCross BlueShield organizations. During Jeff’s tenure as CEO, the company was frequently recognized as one of the fastest-growing technology companies in the U.S., growing from a start-up to approximately $500 million in revenue over its first decade. Following an IPO in 1999, TriZetto was traded on NASDAQ under the symbol TZIX until August, 2008, when it was taken private in a leveraged buyout by private equity investment group led by Apax Partners. Margolis serves as Founder and Chairman of the Board of TriZetto.
Currently, Margolis is extending his mission across other sectors of the healthcare industry. In 2009, Margolis joined the board of directors of Hoag Hospital, and serves on the advisory board of The University of California at Irvine’s Center for Healthcare Management & Policy where he regularly lectures on healthcare information technology. He is a member of the board of governors of Cedars-Sinai and is national board member for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. Jeff is a regular guest faculty member at Harvard School of Public Health's Forces of Change: New Strategies for the Evolving Health Care Marketplace program and is also a regular guest lecturer for the Wharton School of Business Healthcare MBA program. In addition to frequent public speaking in the healthcare industry, he has authored an extensive series of published articles, and, in 2009, published his first book, The Information Cure: Solving the Healthcare Crisis Systematically Through Integrated Healthcare Management.
Prior to founding TriZetto, Margolis served as Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for FHP International Corporation, then the nation’s third largest publicly traded managed health care company with annual revenue of $4.4B. He held enterprise-wide responsibility for all information technology applications for both business and clinical solutions. Formerly, he held similar positions at TakeCare, Inc. ($1.3B), and Comprecare, Inc. ($300M), where he was also Chief Operating Officer. Prior to Comprecare, Mr. Margolis was a health care consulting manager with Andersen Consulting, where he began his career. Jeff graduated with high honors from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Business Administration – Management Information Systems in 1984 and holds CPA certificates in Illinois and Colorado.
