Biography
Dr. Spain is currently a Pediatrician and the Medical Director of the Holyoke Health Center. She joined the staff in 2002 as Director of Pediatrics and due to her outstanding leadership skills, in 2005, she was appointed to the Medical Director position. Dr. Spain graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed her residency at Children’s Hospital, in Boston, in 1996. Prior to coming to Holyoke Health Center, she served as Director of Pediatrics at two other Massachusetts Community Health Centers.
Dr. Spain has a special interest in the integration of disease-based collaborative care into a broader, culturally sensitive, wellness approach to the reduction of health disparities. She has also developed and implemented a provider Leadership Development Program at the Health Center, aimed at encouraging and developing public awareness and involvement in the provider staff. Dr. Spain has also worked hard to develop positive, cooperative working relationships with community agencies and schools, in order to expand Health Center-based disease prevention and treatment into the community.
She has also presented on various aspects of care model-based collaborative care. She has worked with the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved to develop a curriculum for asthma management, which she has presented at a number of national conferences.
