Biography

Elliott received his B.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his M.S. in Acoustical Engineering from North Carolina State University. He is the Senior Scientist, Auditory Research at Aearo Technologies, where he developed, and currently manages, the E·A·RCALSM Acoustical Laboratory, a facility that is accredited for hearing protector attenuation testing under the Department of Commerce's National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP).

For thirty years Elliott has been intensively involved in hearing-protector related research and development. He has authored over 60 journal and magazine articles, hearing-protection chapters in 10 text books, and the on-going EARLog Series. He coordinated and served as principal editor for the 4th and 5th editions of the American Industrial Hygiene Association's Noise Manual, and also was the editor for the 4th edition of the CAOHC (Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation) Hearing Conservation Manual.

Elliott is the chairperson of the Acoustical Society's S12/WG11 working group on hearing protector attenuation and performance, a U. S. representative to ISO TC43/SC1/WG17 on hearing protectors, past Chair of the American Industrial Hygiene Association Committee on Noise, served on a National Academy of Science committee evaluating hearing loss in the military and a National Academy of Engineering committee examining technology for a quieter America, and is involved with a number of other national and international technical committees. As part of a jointly-sponsored scientific conference entitled Combatting Noise in the "90s: A National Strategy for the United States, he was asked to chair a working group on "Consumer Noise Sources and Hearing Protection".

Elliott has received the Outstanding Hearing Conservationist Award from the National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA), and has received the Outstanding Lecture Award for the best presentation at the 1993, 1998, and 2001 annual conferences, and a similar award from the American Industrial Hygiene Association for the best noise lecture in 2001 and 2006.

Elliott is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), past Board Member of the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC), Past President of the National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA), a Board-Certified member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering, and a member of other professional organizations including the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, the American Academy of Audiology, and the Audio Engineering Society.
