Biography

Dr. Edward R. Johnson has served as National Weather Service (NWS) Director of Strategic Planning and Policy since 1999, overseeing NWS strategic planning activities and agency-level policy matters (including private sector relations). He was the principle NWS contact with the National Research Council study leading up to the 2003 report, "Fair Weather: Effective Partnerships in Weather and Climate Services" and a principle author of the NOAA Policy on Partnerships in the Provision of Environmental Information. Prior to joining the NWS flood forecast and warning program in 1983, Dr. Johnson was an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, having earned his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1978.
