SUMMARY:Social Connection and Health Across Adulthood and Later Life
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Healthy Aging Symposium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us for an SBS seminar session led by Visiting Professor\, Dr. Anthony Ong\, as he discusses the importance of social connection\, a central determinant of health across the life course. This talk synthesizes evidence on age-related patterns in loneliness and social isolation\, the ways pandemic conditions disrupted connection\, and why mismatches between objective isolation and subjective loneliness (social asymmetry) carry distinct health risks. Comments on the construct of cumulative social advantage—a multidimensional profile of sustained connections across family\, community\, religious/civic\, and emotional domains—will be made\, showing that stronger profiles are associated with slower biological aging and a lower inflammatory burden. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Anthony Ong \n Professor of Psychology and Director of the Human Health Labs at Cornell University and Professor of Gerontology in Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine\n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDepartment of Social and Behavioral Sciences\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

SUMMARY:What’s at stake for health care reform? Insights from Florida and Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Healthy Aging Symposium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHealth care access\, costs\, and coverage – particularly for lower-income Americans – are expected to undergo dramatic changes in the next few years. Enhanced subsidies that make coverage through the Affordable Care Act marketplace more affordable are set to expire at the end of 2025. Meanwhile\, Medicaid faces billions in cuts and a high probability that people will lose coverage due to new work requirements\, stricter eligibility rules\, and more frequent eligibility reviews. In addition\, changes in Medicaid reimbursement rules and new rural health grants could have nationwide effects. In this event\, former health care leaders from Florida and Massachusetts share their perspectives on how state officials and health care providers will respond in this shifting policy environment.  \n\n\n\nRegister for free to submit your questions.  \n\n\n\nAn on-demand video will be posted after the event.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Justin Senior \n CEO\, Safety Net Hospital Alliance of Florida\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n Kathleen Elizabeth Walsh \n \n Richard L. and Ronay A. SUMMARY:The Global Flourishing Study
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Healthy Aging Symposium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, December 3 for the Epidemiology Seminar Series\, featuring Dr. Tyler VanderWeele discussing The Global Flourishing Study. \n\n\n\nAbstract: The Global Flourishing Study is a longitudinal panel study of over 200\,000 participants in 22 geographically and culturally diverse countries\, spanning all six populated continents\, with nationally representative sampling and intended annual survey data collection for 5 years to assess numerous aspects of flourishing and its possible determinants. The study is intended to expand our knowledge of the distribution and determinants of flourishing around the world. Relations between a composite flourishing index and numerous demographic characteristics are reported. Participants were also surveyed about their childhood experiences\, which were analyzed to determine their associations with subsequent adult flourishing. Analyses are presented both across and within countries\, and discussion is given as to how the demographic and childhood relationships vary by country and which patterns appear to be universal versus culturally specific. Brief comment is also given on the results of a whole series of papers in the Global Flourishing Study Special Collection\, employing similar analyses\, but with more-specific aspects of well-being. The Global Flourishing Study expands our knowledge of the distribution and determinants of well-being and provides foundational knowledge for the promotion of societal flourishing.  \n\n\n\nBio: Tyler J. VanderWeele\, Ph.D.\, is the John L. Loeb and Frances Lehman Loeb Professor of Epidemiology in the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health\, and Director of the Human Flourishing Program and Co-Director of the Initiative on Health\, Spirituality\, and Religion at Harvard University. He holds degrees from the University of Oxford\, University of Pennsylvania\, and Harvard University in mathematics\, philosophy\, theology\, finance\, and biostatistics. His methodological research is focused on theory and methods for distinguishing between association and causation in the biomedical and social sciences and\, more recently\, on psychosocial measurement theory. His empirical research spans psychiatric and social epidemiology; the science of happiness and flourishing; and the study of religion and health. He is the recipient of the 2017 Presidents’ Award from the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS).  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Tyler VanderWeele\, PhD \n John L. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Seminar: \nAdvancing global mental health delivery: The role of digital innovation\, task sharing\, and reciprocal learning
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Healthy Aging Symposium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMental disorders are a leading cause of disability worldwide\, yet in most countries\, individuals living with mental disorders are more likely to have access to a mobile phone than basic mental health care. As digital technologies have fundamentally changed the way we interact with each other and with the world around us\, there are new opportunities to leverage these devices for addressing the significant barriers to implementing and extending the reach of mental health services\, and ultimately towards improving outcomes for those facing the challenges of mental illness. In this presentation\, John Naslund will draw from his field research in both India and in the United States to illustrate how emerging digital technologies can advance task sharing and early intervention in both lower and higher income settings. Importantly\, this involves shifting from ‘digital promise’ to ‘digital practice’\, and realizing the impact of digital innovations in advancing mental health care delivery in real-world settings. Naslund will discuss the potential challenges and hurdles ahead and consider emerging innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI) to advance implementation science and strengthen capacity of health systems\, empower community providers\, and combat stigma towards bridging the global mental health care gap. \n\n\n\nJohn Naslund is co-director of the Mental Health For All Lab at Harvard Medical School\, and faculty in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine. He holds expertise in psychiatric epidemiology\, implementation science\, and digital mental health. Naslund’s scholarship seeks to advance efforts aimed at improving the lives of individuals facing the challenges of mental illness worldwide. His work focuses on low-resource settings in India and the U.S.\, using digital innovations to train frontline providers\, support recovery in people with severe mental illness\, and promote peer-to-peer support and mental health advocacy. Naslund’s work is supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health\, the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation\, the Harvard Global Health Institute Burke Fellowship\, Grand Challenges Canada\, the H.E. Butt Foundation\, the Tepper Foundation\, and the Wellcome Trust. Naslund has over 200 peer-reviewed publications and is an Honorary Research Fellow with Sangath\, a world-leading NGO and research organization based in India. He has a longstanding track record advocating for the rights\, dignity\, and quality of healthcare for those living with mental illness. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n John Naslund \n Co-Director\, Mental Health for All Lab; Instructor\, Department of Global Health and Social Medicine\, Harvard Medical School\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDepartment of Global Health and Population\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

SUMMARY:The State of Biomedical Science in the US — How Did We Get Here and What Can We Do?
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Healthy Aging Symposium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 177th Cutter Lecture on Preventive Medicine Abstract: The decades following the Vandervar Bush report on governmental investment in scientific research were times of extraordinary growth and innumerable accomplishments for the US biomedical research enterprise. NIH funding grew from 45 million dollars in 1945 to over 41 billion dollars by 2020. Health outcomes improved dramatically\, at least in part because of the science generated by that investment. Heading into 2020\, the future of US biomedical research appeared remarkably bright. Adding in the extraordinary response of our scientific and clinical systems to the COVID-19 pandemic\, few would have predicted the current challenges facing biomedical research in the US. Understanding how we got here is a first step towards restoring the trajectory of biomedical research in the US. \n\n\n\nThis hybrid event offers livestream and in-person viewing options (with limited in-person seating). Seats in the main auditorium are first come\, first served. There will also be a recording of the event for those who cannot attend. \n\n\n\nStay for the reception 5:00-6:00PM in Sebastian’s Cafe. \n\n\n\nOpen to the public. \n\n\n\nSpeakers will share their own perspectives; they do not speak for Harvard. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n \n Katrina Armstrong\, MD \n \n Executive Vice President for Health and Biomedical Sciences\, Columbia University; Dean of the Faculties of Health Sciences and the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons; Chief Executive Officer of Columbia University Irving Medical Center; Harold and Margaret Hatch Professor in the Faculty of Medicine\n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDepartment of Epidemiology\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

SUMMARY:CHDS Seminar With Kayoko Shioda of Boston University
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Healthy Aging Symposium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the Center for Health Decision Science for a seminar with Kayoko Shioda of Boston University\, “Target Trial Emulation for Vaccine Dosing Schedule Evaluation.” Target trial emulation (TTE) is a causal inference framework that uses observational data to emulate a randomized trial. It has become a valuable tool for evaluating treatments and health interventions when randomized trials are not feasible. However\, applying TTE to infectious diseases requires caution due to transmission-related interference. In this talk\, Dr. Shioda will illustrate how TTE can identify optimal vaccine dosing schedules\, including for COVID-19\, and discuss current methodological limitations and possible solutions. \n\n\n\nDr. Shioda is an infectious disease epidemiologist and veterinarian focusing on two research areas: (1) One Health and climate change\, and (2) vaccine epidemiology. For vaccine epidemiology\, she aims to inform vaccine policy by developing novel analytic methods for intervention evaluation\, especially in resource-limited settings where public health data often have various challenges that make it difficult to draw reliable conclusions. She has collaborated with partners across local\, national\, and international organizations in more than 30 countries worldwide.PhD\, DVM\, MPH \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Kayoko Shioda\, PhD\, DVM\, MPH \n Assistant Professor\, Boston University\n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCenter for Health Decision Science\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy
