SUMMARY:Breast Cancer Genome-Wide Association Studies: The End of the Beginning?
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrength in Community: Navigating Careers with Harvard Alumni\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Trainings and Workshops\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, November 5 for the Epidemiology Seminar Series\, featuring Dr. Peter Kraft discussing Breast Cancer Genome-Wide Association Studies: The End of the Beginning? \n\n\n\nAbstract: Breast cancer clusters in families\, but rare\, high risk pathogenic variants in known genes like BRCA1 and BRCA2 explain only a small proportion of this familial aggregation. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified over 150 independent common variants associated with breast cancer incidence\, but more risk variants remain to be found\, in part because of the limited diversity of published GWAS. I describe the Confluence Project (https://confluence.cancer.gov/)\, a collaboration among multiple international consortia to conduct a breast cancer GWAS in over 450\,000 cases and 1\,300\,000 controls\, approximately tripling the overall sample size of the largest breast cancer GWAS to date and quadrupling the sample size in previously undersampled genetic ancestry groups. I discuss governance\, computing\, and analytic issues raised by such large and diverse data\, including approaches to conducting multi-ancestry GWAS and fine-mapping analyses. I also discuss the opportunities provided by integrating well-powered GWAS with emerging experimental genomic annotations and multimodal pathological characterization of tumors. Separately\, I provide an update on the Connect for Cancer Prevention Cohort (https://www.cancer.gov/connect-prevention-study/) and its plans for broad data sharing. \n\n\n\nBio: Dr. Kraft is the Director of the Trans-Divisional Research Program in the NCI’s intramural Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics. He provides strategic leadership to transdisciplinary research teams across the Division\, helping identify and shape new research opportunities and oversees data platforms and tools that enable collaboration. Dr. Kraft’s research focuses on devising and applying statistical techniques to large-scale observational studies of genetic and circulating biomarkers\, with particular emphasis on studies understanding the joint contribution of germline DNA variation\, environmental exposures and biomarkers to risk of complex disease. He has contributed to multiple international consortia studying genetics and other exposures in relation to cancer risk over the last twenty years. Prior to joining DCEG\, Dr. Kraft was Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health from 2003-2023. He remains an Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at the Harvard Chan School.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Peter Kraft\, PhD \n Adjunct Professor\, Department of Epidemiology; Faculty Affiliate\, Department of Biostatistics\, Harvard T.H. Generalized Risk-Adjusted Cost-Effectiveness (GRACE) provides a direct method for measuring patient risk preferences and incorporating these into cost-effectiveness estimates. In this presentation\, we will discuss: 1) the rationale for GRACE as a way of explaining discordance between traditional cost-effectiveness analysis (TCEA) and the behavior of patients and payers; 2) the economic theory behind GRACE; 3) empirical estimates of GRACE-based utility over health; and 4) a practical approach for estimating GRACE using only inputs from standard TCEA models. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Darius Lakdawalla\, PhD \n Chief Scientific Officer\, USC Schaeffer Center; Quintiles Chair\, USC Mann School; Professor\, USC Price School of Public Policy\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCenter for Health Decision Science\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Executive and Continuing Education

SUMMARY:The Science Behind the Cancer Prevention Studies
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrength in Community: Navigating Careers with Harvard Alumni\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Trainings and Workshops\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, November 12th for a joint seminar of the Department of Epidemiology and the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center\, featuring Dr. Alpa Patel discussing The Science Behind the Cancer Prevention Studies.  \n\n\n\nAbstract: This talk will present a brief history of the Cancer Prevention Studies\, a series of large\, nationwide prospective cohort studies conducted by the American Cancer Society generationally since the 1950’s. These studies have been instrumental along with other cohorts\, such as those conducted at Harvard University\, in advancing cancer prevention and control as well as cancer survivorship and outcomes. This talk will present the construct of these cohorts\, availability of data and biologic specimens\, and key findings from each of the studies.  \n\n\n\nBio: Dr. Alpa V. Patel earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida\, her Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University\, and her Doctoral degree in Preventive Medicine with a concentration in Epidemiology from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. She is the Senior Vice President of Population Science at the American Cancer Society and serves as the principal investigator of the Cancer Prevention Studies (CPS) II and 3\, two long-term\, large-scale\, epidemiologic cohort studies established by the American Cancer Society. Combined\, these two cohorts include over 1.5 million participants with a variety of over 400\,000 biologic samples (such as blood\, buccal cells\, saliva\, stool\, and tumor tissue). Additionally\, as the co-Principal Investigator\, Dr. Patel and team launched the largest ever cancer cohort of Black women in the U.S. aimed to enroll at least 100\,000 Black women to understand the multi-level drivers of cancer risk and outcomes in this population. Dr. Patel is a recognized leader in cancer epidemiology with particular emphases on the role of physical inactivity\, obesity\, sedentary behavior and cancer as well as risk assessment and blood-based markers of cancer detection. She has published nearly 300 scientific articles and book chapters\, and her research has contributed significantly to national and international cancer prevention guidelines\, such as the US Physical Activity Guidelines for Health and the American Cancer Society’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Guidelines for both cancer prevention and cancer survivorship.    \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Alpa Patel\, PhD \n Senior Vice President\, Population Science\, American Cancer Society\n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDepartment of Epidemiology\n\n\n\nDana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Executive and Continuing Education

SUMMARY:Raising Caring\, Moral\, and Thriving Children
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrength in Community: Navigating Careers with Harvard Alumni\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Trainings and Workshops\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn November 12th\, 2025\, we held the third installment in our Virtues for Well-being seminar series. This event featured Richard Weissbourd\, Director of the Making Caring Common Project and Senior Lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. \n\n\n\n	\n	\n\n\n\nEvent Description\n\n\n\nThis talk discussed how we can raise caring\, moral children in today’s world. Richard Weissbourd argued that the intense focus on achievement and happiness in child-raising has crowded out attention to children’s moral development and that all the focus on happiness is\, ironically\, making children less happy. He offered concrete ideas for how we can raise children who are both moral and likely to thrive. Weissbourd also discussed how moral failures in our public life pose specific threats to moral development and how we can mitigate these harms and develop in children key capacities they will need to strengthen our communities and democracy. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biography\n\n\n\nRichard Weissbourd is a Senior Lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and he also teaches at the Kennedy School of Government. His work focuses on moral development\, meaning\, and purpose\, mental health challenges among teens and young adults\, and effective schools and services for children facing risks. He directs the Making Caring Common Project\, a national effort to make moral and social development priorities in child-raising\, and to provide strategies to schools and parents for promoting in children caring\, a commitment to justice and other key moral and social capacities. He leads an initiative to reform college admissions\, Turning the Tide\, which seeks to elevate ethical character\, reduce excessive achievement pressure\, and increase equity and access in the college admissions process. He is also conducting research on how older adults can better mentor young adults and teenagers in developing caring\, mature romantic relationships.  \n\n\n\nHe is a founder of several interventions for children facing risks\, including ReadBoston and WriteBoston\, city-wide literacy initiatives that were led by Mayor Menino. He is also a co-founder of a pilot school in Boston\, the Lee Academy\, that begins with children at 3 years old. He has advised on the city\, state and federal levels on family policy\, parenting and school reform and has written for numerous scholarly and popular publications and blogs\, including The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Wall Street Journal\, Psychology Today and NPR. He is the author of The Vulnerable Child: What Really Hurts America’s Children and What We Can Do About It (Addison-Wesley\, 1996)\, named by the American School Board Journal as one of the top 10 education books of all time. His most recent book\, The Parents We Mean to Be: How Well-Intentioned Adults Undermine Children’s Moral and Emotional Development (Houghton Mifflin 2009)\, was named by The New Yorker as one of the top 24 books of 2009. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Richard Weissbourd \n Senior Lecturer\, Harvard Graduate School of Education\n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Executive and Continuing Education

SUMMARY:The Prevalence and Policy Consequences of "mRNA Vaccine Stigmatization" in the US
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrength in Community: Navigating Careers with Harvard Alumni\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Trainings and Workshops\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDespite their life saving potential\, many prominent voices in American public life have used their social and political platforms to spread misinformation about mRNA vaccine safety and efficacy. In this talk\, Dr. Motta provides new evidence that “mRNA vaccine stigmatization” is evident in the actions of policymakers across multiple levels of government. He also reviews the state of public opinion about mRNA vaccines\, drawing on both original and secondary survey research. He argues that although it is presently unclear whether elites’ efforts to stigmatize mRNA vaccines has spilled over to impact broader US public opinion\, there is growing reason to believe that it will. Ultimately\, Motta concludes that mRNA vaccine stigmatization could come at an important cost; both by eroding public confidence in mRNA vaccination\, and by limiting access to life-saving vaccines. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required in advance. SUMMARY:Harvard Pop Center Social Demography Seminar: "Immigrant health and the duality of risk"
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrength in Community: Navigating Careers with Harvard Alumni\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Trainings and Workshops\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArun Hendi\, PhD\, associate professor\, sociology and public affairs\, Princeton University\, presents (remotely) “Immigrant health and the duality of risk.” The Social Demography Seminar (SDS) series at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies provides a lively forum for scholars from across the university to discuss in-progress social scientific and population research. Social demography includes work that uses demographic methods to describe and explain the distribution of social goods across populations. The hybrid series offers presentations on a wide variety of topics such as family\, gender\, race/ethnicity\, population health—including mortality\, morbidity\, and functional health—inequality\, immigration\, fertility\, and the institutional arrangements that shape and respond to population processes. \n\n\n\nWith the aim of disseminating scholarly research\, The Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies hosts a diverse array of speakers. They do not represent or speak for the Center\, the School or the University\, and hosting them does not imply endorsement of their views\, organizations\, or employers. \n\n\n\nThis event is open to the public.
