SUMMARY:From Signal to Noise: Addressing Multiplicity Using the Exposome-Neurodevelopment Example
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHealthcare in the Crosshairs: US Foreign Policy and the Destruction of Public Health in Lebanon & Gaza\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, October 8 for the Epidemiology Seminar Series\, featuring Dr. Stefania Papatheodorou discussing From Signal to Noise: Addressing Multiplicity Using the Exposome-Neurodevelopment Example. \n\n\n\nAbstract: In epidemiologic research\, investigators frequently examine numerous concurrent environmental exposures and outcomes within a single study. However\, the degree of multiplicity involved is often underreported or unclear. The question of how to appropriately handle multiplicity—whether during study design\, statistical analysis\, or in the communication of findings—remains a subject of considerable debate. This issue becomes even more pressing in exposome research\, where the potential number of exposures is vast and continuously growing. Since causality cannot be reliably inferred solely from the presence of statistically significant associations\, it is crucial to enhance transparency around multiplicity. Doing so helps mitigate the risk of spurious associations and strengthens the credibility of reported findings. This talk will explore these concepts through an example on ambient exposome and neurodevelopmental delays\, and it will outline future directions to improve methodological rigor and reproducibility across life sciences.  \n\n\n\nBio: Stefania Papatheodorou\, MD\, PhD\, MSc\, is an Associate Professor in Epidemiology at Rutgers School of Public Health and a trained obstetrician and gynecologist. Her research lies at the intersection of extreme weather\, air pollution\, pregnancy\, and children’s health. She has been the primary investigator on multiple epidemiological studies examining the association between prenatal exposure to extreme weather\, air pollutants\, and adverse pregnancy and childhood outcomes. Her research utilizes a wide range of administrative data sources\, such as electronic health records\, birth registries\, and claims data. She is currently focused on examining the effects of prenatal and early childhood exposure to extreme weather and air pollutants on children’s neurodevelopmental outcomes.    \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Stefania Papatheodorou\, MD\, PhD\, MSc \n Adjunct Associate Professor of Epidemiology\, Harvard T.H. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Seminar:\nThe air we share: Lessons from a career in pulmonary and global health research
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHealthcare in the Crosshairs: US Foreign Policy and the Destruction of Public Health in Lebanon & Gaza\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWilliam Checkley is a physician-scientist and global health expert whose research focuses on chronic respiratory diseases\, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)\, in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). He is a professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University with joint appointments in International Health and Biostatistics\, and he directs the Center for Global Non-Communicable Disease Research and Training. He has authored >400 publications in peer-reviewed journals\, with more than 24\,000 citations and an h-index of 77. \n\n\n\nCheckley’s work addresses the global burden of COPD\, which disproportionately affects LMICs. His work spans a wide spectrum—from observational cohort studies identifying risk factors such as household air pollution and low lung growth and development\, to randomized controlled trials testing interventions to improve disease outcomes in real-world settings. In collaboration with international partners\, Checkley has led studies like the Global Excellence in COPD Outcomes (GECo) trial\, which evaluates the effectiveness of community health worker-delivered self-management interventions for COPD in Nepal\, Peru\, and Uganda. These studies aim to improve COPD care in underserved populations. He has also developed and validated simple\, cost-effective screening tools for COPD to facilitate early diagnosis and management in resource-limited settings. \n\n\n\nCheckley is also committed to building research capacity in LMICs. He co-leads Fogarty International Center-funded training programs in Peru and elsewhere\, focusing on environmental exposures and chronic pulmonary diseases\, to mentor the next generation of researchers in these regions. SUMMARY:The Science of Sustainable Giving: How Empathy and Generosity Support Health and Flourishing
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHealthcare in the Crosshairs: US Foreign Policy and the Destruction of Public Health in Lebanon & Gaza\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn October 15th\, 2025\, we held the second seminar in our Virtues for Well-being series. Social psychologist Dr. Sara Konrath presented\, “The Science of Sustainable Giving: How Empathy and Generosity Support Health and Flourishing.” \n\n\n\n	\n	\n\n\n\nEvent Description\n\n\n\nMany of us devote our time\, energy\, care\, and resources to supporting others—whether through helping family and friends\, volunteering in our communities\, offering empathy in daily interactions\, or giving financially. But what are the implications of these generous behaviors for our own well-being\, social connections\, and physical health? This talk explores the growing body of interdisciplinary research on empathy and generosity\, focusing on how different forms of giving—emotional\, practical\, and financial—shape not only the lives of recipients but also the givers themselves. Drawing on findings from psychology\, public health\, and neuroscience\, as well as new data from the 2025 World Happiness Report co-authored by Dr. Konrath\, we will examine how and when generosity enhances flourishing. The session will offer guidance for how to give with intention\, boundaries\, and joy\, with practical\, evidence-based strategies for giving and caring in sustainable\, rather than depleting\, ways. By approaching empathy and generosity as both a science and an art\, this talk invites attendees to reflect on their own giving practices and to discover how empathy and generosity—when wisely offered—can serve as powerful contributors to their own and others’ wellbeing. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biography\n\n\n\nDr. Sara Konrath is a social psychologist and Director of the Interdisciplinary Program on Empathy and Altruism Research at Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. Her research examines the development\, benefits\, and promotion of empathy\, generosity\, and social connection. She has documented generational trends in empathy and narcissism\, and linked empathy and giving to well-being and health. Konrath has developed innovative digital tools to increase empathy and partnered with educators\, physicians\, fundraisers\, dating apps\, zoos\, and museums to evaluate empathy-based interventions. She has published over 100 scientific papers and delivered 300+ presentations\, including at SouthXSouthwest and the Aspen Ideas Institute. She is a co-author of the 2025 World Happiness Report\, co-organizer of the annual Science of Philanthropy Initiative conference\, and has been an editor for leading psychology and nonprofit studies journals. Her work is regularly featured in media outlets such as The New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, Time\, The Atlantic\, NPR\, BBC\, and CBC. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Dr. Sara Konrath \n Director\, iPEARlab.org\n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

SUMMARY:At the Interface of Epidemiology and Health Decision Science: Jointly Shaping Cancer Screening Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHealthcare in the Crosshairs: US Foreign Policy and the Destruction of Public Health in Lebanon & Gaza\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, October 15th for the Epidemiology Seminar Series\, featuring Dr. Uwe Siebert discussing “At the Interface of Epidemiology and Health Decision Science: Jointly Shaping Cancer Screening Strategies“. \n\n\n\nAbstract: Epidemiologic analyses provide essential evidence for decision-analytic models guiding cancer screening policy. This presentation highlights how such data are generated\, transformed\, and linked to inform clinical guidelines\, health technology assessments\, and citizen information\, with case examples from colorectal cancer screening in the U.S. and Europe. Decision-analytic models rely on epidemiologic inputs –-such as disease prevalence\, test performance\, prognosis\, and treatment effectiveness – to compare strategies that differ in age limits\, intervals\, test modalities\, and risk-based algorithms. These models quantify trade-offs between benefits (reduced morbidity/mortality) and harms (false positives\, complications\, overdiagnosis). To ensure reliable guidance\, cross-disciplinary understanding is critical: epidemiologists must recognize how their estimates influence model outputs\, while decision scientists must understand the assumptions\, limitations\, and causal interpretations of those estimates. By fostering collaboration across biostatistics\, epidemiology\, global health and decision science\, we can strengthen the evidence base for cancer screening and ensure strategies appropriately balance benefits and harms.  \n\n\n\nBio: Uwe Siebert\, MPH\, MSc\, ScD\, is a physician by training and Professor of Public Health\, Medical Decision Making and Health Technology Assessment (HTA)\, Chair of the Department of Public Health\, Health Services Research and HTA at UMIT TIROL – University for Health Sciences and Technology in Austria\, and Director of the International Continuing Education Program in HTA and Decision Science (htads.org). He is also Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology and Health Policy & Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Uwe is the current President- of ISPOR – The Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research and former President of the Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM).   \n\n\n\nHis research interests include applying evidence-based quantitative and translational methods in the framework of health care policy advice and HTA as well as in the clinical context of routine health care\, public health policies and patient guidance. He has worked with several HTA Agencies in Europe\, Brazil\, US and Canada and he advises public and government agencies\, academic institutions and industry regarding the conduction of HTAs and their impact on policy and reimbursement decisions. He has authored more than 500 publications and is an Editor of the European Journal of Epidemiology and editorial board member of several scientific journals.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Uwe Siebert\, MD\, MPH\, MSc\, ScD \n Professor of Public Health\, Medical Decision Making and Health Technology Assessment\, UMIT TIROL; Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology and Health Policy & Management\, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health \n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDepartment of Epidemiology\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

SUMMARY:Deep Learning–Based Estimator for the Non-Iterative Conditional Expectation (NICE) g-Formula
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHealthcare in the Crosshairs: US Foreign Policy and the Destruction of Public Health in Lebanon & Gaza\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, October 22 for the “Works In Progress” Epidemiology Seminar Series\, featuring Dr. Jing Li discussing Deep Learning–Based Estimator for the Non-Iterative Conditional Expectation (NICE) g-Formula. \n\n\n\nAbstract: The g-formula can be used to estimate causal effects of sustained treatment strategies using observational data under the identifying assumptions of consistency\, positivity\, and exchangeability. The non-iterative conditional expectation (NICE) estimator of the g-formula also requires correct estimation of the conditional distribution of the time-varying treatment\, confounders\, and outcome. Parametric models\, which have been traditionally used for this purpose\, are subject to model misspecification\, which may result in biased causal estimates\, particularly in high-dimensional or nonlinear settings. To address these limitations\, we propose a unified deep learning framework for the NICE g-formula that leverages recurrent neural networks to flexibly model the joint conditional distribution of time-varying variables. Through simulation studies\, we demonstrate the advantages of the proposed deep learning–based estimator over conventional parametric approaches and establish its statistical validity through uncertainty quantification.  \n\n\n\nBio: Dr. Jing Li is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at CAUSALab in the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health\, working under the mentorship of Prof. Miguel Hernán. Her research focuses on combining causal inference and machine learning to better understand the effects of treatments and interventions in complex longitudinal settings. Her current work includes advancing g-formula methods\, developing deep learning techniques to improve the estimation of sustained treatment effects\, and building large-scale simulation experiments to evaluate the performance of deep learning-based estimators. Her work has appeared in leading venues such as CVPR\, ICLR\, AAAI\, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing (TIP)\, and NeurIPS workshops. In addition to academic publications\, she is the primary developer of the open-source Python package pygformula\, and also contributes to several other causal inference software packages\, including gfoRmula and gfoRmulaICE. Jing Li received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Peking University\, where she was advised by Prof. Yizhou Wang in the School of Computer Science. She received her bachelor’s degree in Statistics from the School of Mathematics and Statistics at Wuhan University.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Jing Li\, PhD \n Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, Department of Epidemiology\, Harvard T.H. Marion Sims in the 1840s. Curated by the Resilient Sisterhood Project with artist Jules Arthur\, the exhibition blends past and present\, honoring these foremothers while highlighting generations of Black women who transformed medicine. This powerful narrative invites us to unearth history\, confront the present\, and imagine a more just future for reproductive health. Learn more about the exhibit at countway.info/call. \n\n\n\nThe opening reception will feature artist and curator statements\, a panel discussion\, the unveiling of the newest addition to the collection\, live music by pianist Kimie Han\, and light refreshments. It is preventable. Like pervasive diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis\, we can diagnose and document violence against children\, treat it and ultimately eradicate it. Join us for a wide-ranging discussion focusing on this topic to mark the publication of an important new book\, Protecting the World’s Children: Public Health\, Human Rights\, Capabilities\, co-edited by FXB Senior Fellow Susan Bissell and A.K. Shiva Kumar. The book includes the work of leading experts on the multi-faceted threats and violations facing today’s children. Panelists will engage with several key child protection issues and discuss solutions that demand urgent attention and action. \n\n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University\, the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute at Harvard University\, the Carr-Ryan Center for Human Rights at the Harvard Kennedy School\, the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative\, the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University\, and BYkids. \n\n\n\nSpeaker remarks are based on their own scholarship and experience. SUMMARY:Prostate Cancer Screening: What’s Gone Wrong? What Can We Get Right?
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHealthcare in the Crosshairs: US Foreign Policy and the Destruction of Public Health in Lebanon & Gaza\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, October 29 for the Epidemiology Seminar Series\, featuring Dr. Kevin Kensler discussing Prostate Cancer Screening: What’s Gone Wrong? What Can We Get Right? \n\n\n\nAbstract: Prostate cancer screening is at a crossroads. Despite evidence that screening prostate-specific antigen (PSA) can reduce advanced disease and mortality\, current practices too often overscreen older men while underserving those at highest risk. This seminar will examine where prostate cancer screening has gone wrong and highlight opportunities for more targeted\, equitable approaches to early detection.  \n\n\n\nBio: Kevin Kensler\, ScD\, MHS\, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences at Weill Cornell Medicine and member of the Cancer Prevention and Control program at the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine. His research focuses on prostate cancer epidemiology\, with emphasis on screening\, disparities\, survivorship\, and molecular heterogeneity. He has examined how changes in screening guidelines have shaped trends in advanced disease\, particularly across socioeconomic and racial groups\, and uses large-scale population and clinical data to study risk and prognosis. Collectively\, his research aims to guide policies and interventions that advance equitable and personalized approaches to prostate cancer prevention and early detection.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Kevin Kensler\, ScD\, MHS \n Assistant Professor of Population Health Sciences\, Weill Cornell Medicine \n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDepartment of Epidemiology\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy
