SUMMARY:Why Medicaid matters: A conversation with former NC Gov. Roy Cooper

He also worked with hospitals to create a medical debt relief program aimed at helping nearly 2 million residents get out from under the weight of $4 billion in medical bills that they couldn’t afford to pay. In this conversation\, Gov. Cooper will explain the value he sees in Medicaid and the potential impact of federal funding cuts to public health. He will also discuss his experience building coalitions across party lines to address healthcare needs in his state. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Roy Cooper \n Former Governor of North Carolina and Richard L. and Ronay A. SUMMARY:Epidemiology of Autism: Substantive Results and Methodological Issues
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrength in Community: Navigating Careers with Harvard Alumni\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Trainings and Workshops\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Since the mid 1960’s\, 165 prevalence surveys of autism were conducted worldwide and their main findings will first be summarized. While the contribution of genetic factors to autism etiology is high\, the increase in autism prevalence has raised concerns about additional contribution of environmental factors. Autism risk has been statistically associated with myriads of exposures but\, with few exceptions\, the causal nature of these associations remains unproven. Estimates are often confounded and results do not replicate across samples and study designs. We review recent findings on select risk factors to illustrate current methodological issues relevant to this research domain.  \n\n\n\nBio: Dr. Eric Fombonne trained in child and adolescent psychiatry in France. This research combines mathematical modeling and empirical work.  Erin finished her PhD in 2012 at the University of California Santa Barbara in Ecology\, Evolution\, and Marine Biology. She then completed a 2-year NSF postdoctoral research fellowship in the Intersection of Biology and Mathematical and Physical Sciences and Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University. Erin has been at Stanford since January 2015.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEach spring\, the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics hosts an annual seminar series\, featuring talks from experts on the latest research in infectious disease epidemiology and modeling. \n\n\n\nSpeakers will share their own perspectives and do not speak for Harvard. \n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Executive and Continuing Education

SUMMARY:Medical Information and Misinformation - \nThe Role of Epidemiology
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrength in Community: Navigating Careers with Harvard Alumni\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Trainings and Workshops\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Cutter Lectures on Preventive Medicine The 9th Symposium \n\n\n\nJoin us as three preeminent speakers address topics on the intersection of health\, misinformation\, and epidemiology adapting to a rapidly changing information landscape. \n\n\n\n\nStefanie Friedhoff will speak on Defending the Science\, Losing the Narrative: A Path Forward for Health Promotion in Chaotic Information Ecosystems. Abstract: At the heart of the information crisis that is eroding advances in health around the world lies a difficult truth: societies are not able to meet the information needs of people and communities amidst rapidly changing\, increasingly weaponized information spaces. This talk will illuminate how an overfocus on atoms of misinformation can stand in the way of addressing broader narratives\, and miss drivers of vulnerability to misleading information such as outdated communications practices\, information inequities\, polarization\, and negative experiences with the healthcare system. Introducing the lens of information as a social determinant of health\, Friedhoff will discuss how information can both directly and indirectly impact health outcomes. Charting a path forward\, she will share emerging insights from research and practice on how public health and medicine can more effectively engage diverse publics in health promotion in a changed information landscape.\n\n\n\nAlfredo Morabia will speak on Epidemiology at a Crossroads: History\, Misinformation\, and the Defense of Public Health.Abstract: Throughout history\, epidemiology has stood at the crossroads of science and political pressure\, providing critical public health insights despite efforts to suppress inconvenient truths. From Cold War-era studies on radiation exposure to the politically charged investigations of the AIDS crisis\, epidemiologists have navigated resistance from powerful institutions. Today\, political interventions once again challenge the field’s ability to inform public health policy. This talk explores historical parallels and key differences between past and present contexts\, highlighting the enduring tension between truth and misinformation\, and what history teaches us about defending public health.\n\n\n\nIssa Dahabreh will speak on Causal Inference and Causal Language for Observational Studies in Medical Journals.\n\n\n\n\nProduced by the Department of Epidemiology with co-sponsors the Department of Biostatistics and Center for Health Communications. This hybrid event offers livestream and in-person viewing options (with limited in-person seating).
