SUMMARY:Pandemic Preparedness: The Role of Virus-Restricted Vaccines and Universal Antiviral Drugs
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Healthy Aging Symposium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBRIEF ABSTRACT  \n\n\n\nPandemic Preparedness as a concept has four unknowns to deal with: 1) how often can we expect a pandemic causing excess mortality and morbidity to occur\, 2) what virus will cause it?\, 3) are panzoonotic infections a harbinger of a human pandemic driven by human to human transmission\, and 4) does the change in climate increases the frequency of panzoonotics and pandemics? Recent data on 12\,000 mammalian virus-host interactions suggest that enveloped viruses are the most likely cause of the next pandemic and among those a segmented enveloped RNA virus with a high rate of antigenic drift and shift\, maximizing viral escape from immune interventions\, may present the biggest threat. Currently members of the panzoonotic H5 virus family are spreading rapidly among birds and a wide range of mammal species. Evidence will be presented that a combination of an easy-to-use universal antiviral drug for the first 100 days able to prevent human-to-human transmission and a series of prime and boost virus family-specific vaccines thereafter protecting against severe human disease by consecutive and fast evolving virus strains and clades may present the best of options to prevent catastrophic events.   \n\n\n\nSHORT BIO  \n\n\n\nJaap Goudsmit has an MD and PhD degree from the  University of Amsterdam. He was a Fogarthy Scientist at the National Institutes of Health from 1978 till 1983 and was full professor of virology at the University of Amsterdam from 1989-2000.   \n\n\n\nJaap Goudsmit was Chief Scientific Officer of the Vaccine Company Crucell from 2000 till 2011 when the company was acquired by Johnson and Johnson in 2011 and developed an Adenovirus vaccine platform resulting in licensed vaccines against Ebola and Covid-19. SUMMARY:Unraveling injustice and power structures
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Healthy Aging Symposium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn partnership with the Romani Studies Program at Central European University\, the Center on Forced Displacement at Boston University\, the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences Diversity\, Inclusion\, and Belonging Committee and the Women\, Gender\, and Health (WGH) Concentration and Working Group at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health\, the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School\, the Harvard University Committee on Ethnicity\, Migration\, Rights (EMR)\, the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University\, the Religion\, Conflict\, and Peace Initiative at the Harvard Divinity School\, the Palestine Program for Health and Human Rights\, the International Human Rights Clinic at the Harvard Law School\, and the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School\, the Roma Program for Health and Human Rights at the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights will host a free\, hybrid format conference at Harvard University’s Smith Campus Center (10th Floor) on Friday\, April 4\, 2025\, to mark International Roma Day. \n\n\n\nThe event aims to unpack and reframe the enduring reproduction of the artificial hierarchy imposed between white Europeans and European Roma people\, situating it within the broader global theoretical frameworks related to racism\, casteism\, racialization\, and socio-cultural hierarchies and oppressions. Unraveling injustice and power structures will contribute to and expand upon ongoing global dialogues on racialization. \n\n\n\nIt will also create opportunities for new inquiries into how caste and/or racial hierarchies are upheld within educational systems beginning in childhood\, in violation of several articles of the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). \n\n\n\nThe conference will explore three broad and related topics and questions: \n\n\n\n1. The whos\, hows\, what\, and whys of benefiting from the construction and perpetuation of societal hierarchies based on race\, ethnicity\, ancestry\, caste\, and other social identities. \n\n\n\n2. Is there a global agreement on which groups have historically been targeted by racism and racialization? Are there risks associated with appropriating or misunderstanding the concepts of racism and racialization? \n\n\n\n3. In a world where educational systems increasingly undermine diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, how can we foster curricula and school environments that support all historically marginalized groups? \n\n\n\n4. What might a display of global solidarity among historically racialized and oppressed groups look like? \n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFXB Center for Health & Human Rights\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

SUMMARY:Fine-Mapping Causal Tissues and Genes at Disease-Associated Loci
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Healthy Aging Symposium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Complex diseases often have distinct mechanisms spanning multiple tissues. We propose Tissue-Gene Fine-Mapping (TGFM)\, which infers the posterior probability (PIP) for each gene-tissue pair to mediate a disease locus by analyzing summary statistics and eQTL data; TGFM also assigns PIPs to non-mediated variants. TGFM accounts for co-regulation across genes and tissues and models uncertainty in cis-predicted expression models\, enabling correct calibration. We applied TGFM to 45 UK Biobank diseases/traits using eQTL data from 38 GTEx tissues. TGFM identified an average of 147 PIP>0.5 causal genetic elements per disease/trait\, of which 11% were gene-tissue pairs. Causal gene-tissue pairs identified by TGFM reflected both known biology (e.g.\, TPO-thyroid for Hypothyroidism) and biologically plausible findings (e.g.\, SLC20A2-artery aorta for Diastolic blood pressure). Application of TGFM to single-cell eQTL data from 9 cell types in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC)\, analyzed jointly with GTEx tissues\, identified 30 additional causal gene-PBMC cell type pairs. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio: Alkes PriceDr. Price is a professor in the Program in Genetic Epidemiology and Statistical Genetics in the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard Chan\, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Biostatistics.  He is an associate member of the Program in Medical and Population Genetics at the Broad Institute\, and a member of the Program in Quantitative Genomics at Harvard Chan.  Dr. Price received a Ph.D. in mathematics and M.S.E. in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania.  His post-doctoral training was mentored by Dr. Pavel Pevzner in the department of computer science at UCSD and Dr. David Reich in the department of genetics at Harvard Medical School.  He has been a faculty member at Harvard Chan since 2008. Dr. Price’s research focuses on the development of statistical methods for uncovering the genetic basis of human disease\, and on the population genetics underlying these methods.  Areas of interest include functional components of disease heritability\, common vs. rare variant architectures of disease\, and disease mapping in structured populations.  \n\n\n\nBen StroberDr. Strober is a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health supervised by Dr. Alkes Price. SUMMARY:Helping Hands: The Mississippi Delta Food Community
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Healthy Aging Symposium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a preview of the documentary Helping Hands followed by a conversation with the filmmaker Jack Thomas Spears on the resilience of the Mississippi Delta’s food community and how neighbors are fighting food insecurity despite the challenges. Light Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nPoverty in the Delta has been written on\, researched\, and is now the model of economic desolation for the rest of the country. For example\, Mississippi is the last state on lists such as employment\, education\, and opportunity. At the same time\, Mississippi is the first state on lists such as obesity\, crime\, and poverty. Those living outside of the Delta are quick to the perspective of negativity\, desolation\, and decline when thinking about the Delta. These individuals are quick to point towards the looming statistics without having a thought towards the communities represented by those numbers. However\, the narrative does not end there. In spite of all the mentioned struggles faced in this region\, a deep sense of community continues to resiliently grow behind the shadow of poverty. A sense of community where gardens are being utilized to feed senior citizens\, churches are using their buses to drive members to grocery stores\, and mayors double as food pantry directors. A sense of community that anyone living in the Delta is aware of and lives with. A sense of community that is hidden by negative stereotypes to much of the nation and especially the rest of Mississippi. Helping Hands stands in the gap of research and perspective between the looming statistics of food insecurity and the community that stands defiantly in opposition. \n\n\n\nEvent Flier \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOffice of Educational Programs\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

In this presentation\, I will provide an overview of the relationship between housing instability and children’s health drawing on a range of recent studies. I will also describe evidence from both quasi-experimental and experimental research to demonstrate how housing interventions can mitigate negative impacts and promote healthier outcomes for children.  \n\n\n\nBio: Dr. Natalie Slopen is a social epidemiologist with a focus on child development\, health equity\, and life course theory. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Slopen’s research focuses on how social and environmental factors influence health and well-being in childhood and across the lifespan. Her work\, encompassing both observational and experimental studies\, aims to generate insights that can shape effective policies and programs to promote health equity.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Natalie Slopen\, ScD \n Associate Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences\, Social and Behavioral Sciences\, Harvard T.H. The Harvard COOP will be selling copies of the book at the event\, and Dr. Dockery will be available to sign copies of the book (that you bring or purchase there). \n\n\n\nThe book signing will take place immediately following the live-streamed Studio discussion\, Breathing easier: The pursuit of clean air\, featuring Dr. Dockery and his co-author\, Arden Pope. \n\n\n\nParticles of Truth is a riveting account of the discovery of the critical health effects of air pollution told by Arden Pope and Douglas Dockery\, who have been at the forefront of air pollution and health research for four decades. With an insightful foreword by former EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy\, this compelling book provides an inside look at groundbreaking scientific research and ensuing political and public-policy battles. It presents evidence that air pollution is a major contributor to disease and death and that reducing air pollution saves lives. The book also delves into intense efforts to discredit and cast doubt on the science. SUMMARY:Architecture & the 21st-Century Paradigm Shift: Designing for the Subliminal Brain - for Health\, Well-being & Happiness
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Healthy Aging Symposium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type: Seminar \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn April 23rd\, we held the final instalment in our Environments for Health and Happiness Seminar Series\, featuring architect and author Ann Sussman. \n\n\n\nEvent Description: \n\n\n\nThis talk discusses the neuroscience that reframes our understanding of how architecture impacts us\, including how people non-consciously take in their surroundings\, and how that influences public health and placemaking.  The talk will demonstrate eye-tracking and other biometric tools which reveal non-conscious human behaviors\, including how our brain is hardwired to seek out detail and avoids looking at blankness in the built environment.  \n\n\n\nThe big idea? Today’s biometric tools provide a new lens to ’see’ our world\, transforming our understanding of what people need to see and be in to be at their best. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: \n\n\n\nAnn Sussman\, an architect\, author\, researcher and teacher\, is passionate about understanding how buildings impact us. She serves as president of the Human Architecture + Planning Institute\, (theHapi.org)\, a nonprofit devoted to improving the design of the built environment through education and research. Her book Cognitive Architecture\, Designing for How We Respond to the Built Environment (Routledge\, 2015\, 2021) won the 2016 Place Research Award from the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA). Ann teaches a course on using biometrics in design\, ‘Buildings\, Biology + the Brain’\, at the Boston Architectural College (BAC). She co-edited the forthcoming Handbook of Neuroscience and the Built Environment (Routledge\, 2025)\, due out this June\, which compiles 31 chapters by 50 authors on 4 continents\, who are eager to bridge the arts and sciences to promote health and wellbeing worldwide. \n\n\n\n\nSEMINAR RECORDING\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Ann Sussman \n Architect and Author\n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

SUMMARY:Epidemiologic Methods and Data Science: Stronger Together
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Healthy Aging Symposium\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Epidemiologic methods often focus on a statistical model as the main step to getting “the” result. This talk will attempt to widen the perspective on epidemiologic methods. How do we develop and communicate our research plans in a team? How do the numbers from a regression model make it into a table in a manuscript? Practical examples will be shown how standard approaches from data science and free software packages can speed up our work in epidemiology and improve its reproducibility. As a corollary\, epidemiology-minded data science might not just need to be a core component in the training of the next generation of epidemiologists\, but can in turn also help teach epidemiologic methods.  \n\n\n\nBio: Konrad Stopsack leads the Department of Epidemiological Methods and Etiological Research at the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS in Bremen\, Germany. His applied research focuses on molecular and cancer epidemiology. His methodologic and teaching interests include application and further development of epidemiologic methods to improve reproducibility\, interpretability\, and efficiency of epidemiologic studies.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Konrad H.
