Both methodologies have well-known drawbacks\, including the dependence on income and the treatment of inequities. This presentation discusses an alternative methodology for estimating the full burden of diseases: social welfare function analysis. An application to the full global burden of type 1 diabetes is provided. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Maddalena Ferranna\, assistant professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical and Health Economics at the University of Southern California \n Her research focuses on development and application of distribution-sensitive economic evaluation methods. Her current research projects focus on the value of investing in pandemic preparedness\, the economic benefits of potential Strep A vaccines\, the economic burden of type 1 diabetes\, and the value of climate change mitigation health co-benefits.<br><br><br>Speakers share their own perspectives; they do not speak for the Center for Health Decision Science or for Harvard University.\n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nkiran_ahmad@hsph.harvard.edu\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Executive and Continuing Education

SUMMARY:What Surrounds Us Shapes Us: How Developmental Environments Shape Lifelong Health and Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Science and Practice of Human–Animal Interaction\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeminar \n\n\n\n	Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Watch the Seminar	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn March 5th\, 2025\, we held the fourth installment of our Environments for Health and Happiness Seminar Series\, featuring Dr. Lindsey Burghardt of the Harvard Center on the Developing Child. \n\n\n\n\nWATCH THE SEMINAR\n\n\n\n\nEvent Description: \n\n\n\nThis talk discussed how\, beginning well before birth\, children’s development and lifelong health is shaped by the full range of experiences and exposures that they have in the places where they live\, learn\, play and grow.  This includes the relationships they have with the adults in their lives\, as well as with the built and natural environments that surround them.  The developmental environment is affected and shaped by systemic forces such as climate change and structural racism\, both of which shape development through their effects on children’s environments. Just as developmental environments have been designed by policy decisions made over time\, there are things that all of us can do to redesign environments in a way that allows all children to thrive. We all have a role and solutions are at hand; collectively\, we can care for the children in our society and ensure a bright future for us all. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: \n\n\n\nLindsey Burghardt\, MD\, MPH\, FAAP is the Chief Science Officer at the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University\, where she develops and leads the Center’s scientific agenda. She is the founding director of the Center’s Early Childhood Scientific Council for Equity and the Environment\, a multidisciplinary group that synthesizes and translates scientific mechanisms related to the many ways that the built and natural environments impact children’s development and lifelong health. She engages regularly in presentations and conversations with diverse stakeholders to communicate this science to a variety of audiences\, with the goal of making it both accessible and actionable. Lindsey is also a practicing primary care pediatrician in the community outside of Boston and is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine. She completed her master’s in public health in health policy and management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n \n Lindsey Burghardt \n \n Chief Science Officer\, Center on the Developing Child \n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Executive and Continuing Education
