SUMMARY:#SexCells: Investigating parental toxicant exposures in the etiology of autism and neurodevelopmental disorders with Jill Escher
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Harvard Global Health Student Research Showcase\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Conferences and Symposia\, From Around the School\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join the Harvard Chan NIEHS Center for Environmental Health for a talk by Jill Escher\, JD\, MA\, on December 4\, 2024 at 2 pm ET on Zoom. \n\n\nVisit hsph.me/NIEHS-seminar to register. \n\n\nIn a seeming paradox\, research has found steadily increasing rates of autism while also finding the condition is strongly heritable. These phenomena may be at least partly reconciled\, however\, when viewed through the lens of genetic (germline) toxicology. In this presentation research advocate Jill Escher\, MA\, JD\, shares the latest research showing how certain toxicant exposures\, such as modern halogenated general anesthesia\, to the parents can raise risk for neurodevelopmental pathology in the offspring\, via parental germline perturbations\, while also discussing implications for epidemiological investigations. \n\n\n\nJill Escher\, JD\, MA\, is the founder of Escher Fund for Autism\, a fund that supports autism programs and research. She also serves as president of the National Council on Severe Autism\, secretary and past president of Autism Society San Francisco Bay Area\, and co-chair of the Germ Cell SIG of the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society. Her work has been published in Environmental Epigenetics\, Biology of Reproduction\, Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis\, and the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. She is a former lawyer and is the mother of two children with idiopathic profound autism\, Jonathan\, 25\, and Sophie\, 18. Recent research has shown that people who frequently volunteer tend to live longer lives and that practicing gratitude can reduce smoking cravings. Our panelists will discuss ways to encourage prosocial behaviors\, such as altruism\, cooperation\, compassion\, and empathy\, and\, in turn\, improve the health of both individuals and their communities.   \n\n\n\nRegister for free to submit your questions.    \n\n\n\nAn on-demand video will be posted after the event.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n \n Laura D. Publishing research data within a trusted repository helps you comply with funder and journal data sharing policies\, supports the discovery of and access to data\, and can result in more visibility and higher impact for research projects. \n\n\nIn this webinar we will review a variety of institutional\, generalist\, and discipline-specific data repositories you can use to share your research data according to best practices. Participants will gain an understanding of the diverse landscape of repository options and which features may be relevant for their discipline\, data type\, or funder requirements. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Executive and Continuing Education
