SUMMARY:Harvard Injury Control Research Center Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt the front lines of global health messaging: A conversation with WHO’s retired communications director\n\n\n\n	Global Health\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\, Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoshua Aiken will explore the relationship between the mass proliferation of handguns in America and political\, economic\, and cultural responses to the black freedom struggle. Using the personal papers of federal legislators\, the lobbying records of firearms manufacturing companies\, social survey data\, and oral histories\, Aiken will describe how notions of “gun control” shifted throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Specifically\, Aiken will look at how U.S. racial capitalism influenced the Gun Control Act of 1968 and the legal strategies used by those advocating for an interpretation of the Second Amendment that guaranteed an “individual right” to keep and bear arms. \n\n\nBrennan Gardner Rivas will be presenting on the long tradition of regulating deadly weapons through state and local laws restricting the carrying of them in public places in the United States. These public carry laws were misdemeanor offenses enforced locally by constables\, deputies\, marshals\, and police. Dr. Rivas has created a dataset of historical public carry offenses in Texas containing thousands of cases and defendants from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In this presentation\, she shares the results of her research regarding racially discriminatory enforcement of these foundationally important gun laws. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Executive and Continuing Education

You will leave with strengthened foundational GIS skills. We will also provide example approaches to especially challenging GIS data problems. \n\n\nWe will use the open source desktop software QGIS for hands-on practice and demonstrate how to scale up or integrate GIS methods into programming workflows\, such as using R or Python for data analysis. No prior GIS experience is necessary for this workshop; the materials are slightly tailored to those already working with data in their research. \n\n\nWorkshop sessions are limited to 12 participants per session\, to guarantee hands-on help and troubleshooting. If you register and don’t think you can make it\, please email Julie Goldman to make your seat available for someone else. \n\n\nThis will be a collaborative session with group discussion and interactive components. If you would prefer one-on-one instruction\, please email the organizer\, or book a GIS consultation with the Harvard Map Collection. \n\n\nInstructor: Belle Lipton\, GIS Outreach Librarian\, Harvard Map Collection \n\n\nThis is an in-person workshop. Registration is limited and attendees must have a Harvard University ID (HUID) to enter the Countway Library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Executive and Continuing Education
