SUMMARY:Harvard Pop Center Social Demography Seminar with Julia Behrman
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorking With Your Brain: Compassionate Strategies for Focus and Follow-Through\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJulia Behrman\, PhD\, associate professor of sociology\, Northwestern University\, presents “The deinstitutionalization of parenthood in the United States.” \n\n\n\nThe Social Demography Seminar (SDS) series at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies provides a lively forum for scholars from across the university to discuss in-progress social scientific and population research. Social demography includes work that uses demographic methods to describe and explain the distribution of social goods across populations. The hybrid series offers presentations on a wide variety of topics such as family\, gender\, race/ethnicity\, population health—including mortality\, morbidity\, and functional health—inequality\, immigration\, fertility\, and the institutional arrangements that shape and respond to population processes. \n\n\n\nWith the aim of disseminating scholarly research\, The Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies hosts a diverse array of speakers. They do not represent or speak for the Center\, the School or the University\, and hosting them does not imply endorsement of their views\, organizations\, or employers. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n \n Julie Behrman\, PhD \n \n Associate professor of sociology\, Northwestern University\n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHarvard Center for Population and Development Studies\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

SUMMARY:Implementation Science: The Key to Ensuring that Epidemiologic Research Impacts Health
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorking With Your Brain: Compassionate Strategies for Focus and Follow-Through\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, November 4th for the Department of Epidemiology seminar series featuring Dr. Karen Emmons. \n\n\n\nAbstract: This talk will provide an overview of the field of implementation science\, with a particular focus on its potential intersections with epidemiology. A major point will be that it is critical to understand implementation science in order to maximize the likelihood that epidemiologic findings will translate into improved health. Participants should emerge with a better understanding of implementation science and how it can be useful to epidemiologists.  \n\n\n\nBio: Karen Emmons is a Professor of Social and Behavioral Science at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She has expertise in cancer disparities and in implementation science.  Her work focuses on community-engaged approaches to implementation of cancer prevention and early detection interventions in settings that serve low income and disadvantaged communities. She has more than 375 peer-reviewed publications and has served as PI for multiple NIH-funded research projects and centers.  She also serves as Faculty Director of the Community Engagement Program for Harvard’s Clinical Translational Science Award\, Harvard Catalyst\, which focuses on advancing evidence-based strategies to improve community health and creating bi-directional relationships between community partners and researchers. She serves as the MPI of Harvard Chan’s T32 training grant in cancer prevention and control and has received multiple mentoring awards.  Her research has also been recognized by honors including the Morse Distinguished Researcher Award\, Outstanding Senior Cancer Scientist Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine\, and Outstanding Scientist Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine. She is Past-President of the Society of Behavioral Medicine\, and a member of the National Academy of Medicine\, the National Cancer Advisory Board\, and the Community Preventive Services Task Force.   \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n \n Karen Emmons\, PhD \n \n Professor and Interim Co-Chair\, Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences\, Harvard T.H. SUMMARY:Building Stronger\, More Trusting Relationships Across Health Belief Divides
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorking With Your Brain: Compassionate Strategies for Focus and Follow-Through\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, November 4th from 1-1:50 PM in FXB G12 and online\, please join us for the third installment in our Trust and Well-being Seminar Series\, featuring Dr. David Bersoff. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome. Lunch provided. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP TODAY\n\n\n\n\nEvent Description\n\n\n\nIn this year’s health study\, we asked respondents to evaluate a set of health claims: \n\n\n\n\nAnimal protein is healthier than plant-based\n\n\n\nFluoride in water has no health benefits\n\n\n\nThe risks of childhood vaccines outweigh their benefits\n\n\n\nRaw milk is healthier than pasteurized\n\n\n\nAcetaminophen can cause autism\n\n\n\nVaccines are used for population control\n\n\n\n\nAbout 25%-33% said each are true. Viewed in this way\, the data seems to indicate that there is only a fringe element who hold such beliefs. But if instead of looking at the beliefs individually\, we look at them in aggregate\, we find that 70% of people hold at least one. The implication of this is that we may be developing our public health communication and intervention strategies focused in part on a mischaracterization of the people we most need to reach. If we are to increase the success of our health communications and interventions\, we must move beyond counter productive stereotypes.  \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biography\n\n\n\nDr. David Bersoff is the Head of Research for the Edelman Trust Institute\, Edelman’s think tank dedicated to advancing the study of trust in society. As the Institute’s Chief Trust Scientist\, Dr. Bersoff is responsible for ensuring the integrity and scientific value of all of Edelman’s trust-oriented research\, which includes the annual Trust Barometer as well as yearly topical studies examining issues such as trust in the healthcare system. \n\n\n\nPrior to joining Edelman\, Dr. Bersoff spent 17 years as a consumer insights consultant at The Futures Company. In his last 5 years with the company\, he served as its Chief Insights Officer. \n\n\n\nBefore entering the consulting world\, he spent 12 years engaged in social science research at Yale and the University of Pennsylvania\, where he was an assistant professor of social psychology and research methodology. \n\n\n\nDr. Bersoff holds a BA summa cum laude in Philosophy and a Ph.D. in social psychology\, both from Yale University. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n \n Dr. David Bersoff \n \n Head of Research\, Edelman Trust Institute\n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

SUMMARY:Race in the Machine: The Making of Algorithmic Bias (Hybrid lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorking With Your Brain: Compassionate Strategies for Focus and Follow-Through\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThough many of us may think of race as a social construct\, exactly how race has been (and continues to be) constructed is often unclear\, with deadly consequences. This panel discussion brings together scholars who investigate how racial categories are hidden in numerous technologies central to modern life—clinical algorithms\, internet search engines\, computer vision\, and artificial intelligence. Working both within and beyond academia\, these scholars investigate how race becomes embedded in technological systems and the harms that result. How can we better understand the idea of race through its relationship with technology\, and how might we begin to untangle these systems to promote justice? \n\n\n\nFollowing the program\, attendees will have the opportunity to view the new exhibition Measurement on the Color Line: Scientific Instruments and the Making of Human Categories at the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments.  \n\n\n\nAdvance registration is recommended. \n\n\n\nFree event parking is available with registration. Dr. Hendricks will discuss “Cascading and emergent water risks at the margins: Insights from the Stormwater Infrastructure Resilience and Justice (SIRJ) Lab.” \n\n\n\nThis event will be held in person (HSPH Bldg. 1\, 1302) and via Zoom. Register here \n\n\n\nTrainee meeting for students and postdocs immediately following the seminar\, 2-2:30 pm\, in 1306A! Come in-person to discuss research interests\, career plans\, and funding opportunities. RSVP here! \n\n\n\nAbstract\n\n\n\nStormwater hazards are unevenly distributed across urban landscapes\, with working-class communities of color disproportionately exposed to a variety of water risks; conditions intensified by extreme weather. This talk examines how “cascading and emergent water risks” arise at the intersection of aging infrastructure\, environmental variability\, and social inequality. \n\n\n\nDrawing on research from the SIRJ (pronounced surge) Lab\, Dr. Marccus Hendricks introduces conceptual frameworks that situate stormwater systems within broader social\, political\, and environmental contexts\, emphasizing how infrastructure access and performance are shaped by inequitable planning and governance. He demonstrates how cascading risks\, such as stormwater runoff\,  sewer overflows\, and basement backups\, create emergent hazards that extend beyond traditional flooding to impact health\, housing\, and well-being. \n\n\n\nThe talk additionally highlights sensing technologies and advanced GIS modeling to track water and infrastructure\, monitor performance\, and assess real-time conditions. A Baltimore case study illustrates a multi-method approach to evaluate interconnected risks and inform more equitable infrastructure planning and management. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker\n\n\n\nMarccus D. Hendricks is an Associate Professor of Urban Studies and (Environmental) Planning at the University of Maryland (UMD)\, where he directs the Stormwater Infrastructure Resilience and Justice (SIRJ) Lab and holds affiliations in engineering and public health. In 2023\, he served as Senior Advisor for Climate and Community Resilience in the inaugural Office of Environmental Justice at the White House Council on Environmental Quality. \n\n\n\nA leading scholar of environmental justice\, infrastructure resilience\, and water risks\, Dr. Hendricks examines how social processes and development patterns shape hazardous environments that disproportionately affect marginalized communities. His work has been featured by the Associated Press\, Washington Post\, CNN\, NPR\, Bloomberg\, and Scientific American\, among others. \n\n\n\nDr. Hendricks is a 2026–2027 Harvard Radcliffe-Salata Climate Justice Fellow\, former U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board member\, author on the U.S. Fifth National Climate Assessment\, and a 2021 Grist 50 “Fixer.” He holds a PhD in Urban and Regional Sciences and MPH from Texas A&M University. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n \n Marccus D. SUMMARY:Causal Estimands for Clinical and Regulatory Decision Making
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorking With Your Brain: Compassionate Strategies for Focus and Follow-Through\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, December 2nd for the Department of Epidemiology seminar series featuring Dr. Miguel Hernan. \n\n\n\nAbstract: The estimand is what we want to estimate. When conducting research for clinical and regulatory purposes\, the causal estimand typically involves the causal effect of an intervention. Three frameworks have been proposed to describe the causal estimand in randomized trials and observational studies: PICO\, the target trial framework\, and the E9 (R1) Addendum of the International Council for Harmonisation (ICH). This talks provides a side-by-side comparison of these three estimand frameworks for causal inference\, translate across their terminologies\, and highlight their commonalities and peculiarities. For decision makers who ask causal questions\, the target trial framework subsumes the other two frameworks by providing the most flexibility and level of detail. \n\n\n\nBio: Miguel Hernán is the Director of CAUSALab\, the Kolokotrones Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health\, and faculty at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. His team repurposes real world data into actionable evidence for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases\, cancer\, cardiovascular disease\, and mental illness. Their work has contributed to shape health research methodology worldwide. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n \n Miguel Hernan\, MD\, DrPH \n \n Kolokotrones Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology\, Department of Epidemiology\, Director\, CAUSALab\, Harvard T.H.
