This seminar will discuss key challenges in identifying the drivers and underlying biological mechanisms of early-onset cancers and explore how closer integration of epidemiologic and mechanistic studies can advance etiologic discovery. It will conclude with opportunities to translate emerging insights into earlier detection and prevention for younger generations.  \n\n\n\nBio: Yin Cao\, ScD\, MPH\, is a Professor at Washington University in St. Louis. She is a molecular epidemiologist whose research focuses on the life-course determinants and prevention of early-onset cancers. Her recent work explores how population and mechanistic sciences can be brought together to advance cancer cause discovery. She co-leads an interdisciplinary Cancer Grand Challenges team focused on early-onset colorectal cancer. She received her ScD in Epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Epidemiologists are taught to rely on science\, reason\, and facts in their work and yet\, it is likely that we use intuition all the time. We use it when we make decisions about interpreting the results of studies\, about the impact of sources of bias\, in the decisions we make in our own research\, in our teaching and in our communication with other scientists and the general public. Yet it isn’t clear when this approach is useful and when it causes harm. This talk will focus on the role of intuition in epidemiology with examples of cases where we rely on it too much and cases where we don’t use it enough. \n\n\n\nBio: Matthew Fox\, DSc\, MPH\, is a Professor in the Departments of Epidemiology and Global Health at Boston University. Dr. Fox joined Boston University in 1999. His research interests include treatment outcomes in HIV-treatment programs\, infectious disease epidemiology (with specific interests in HIV and pneumonia)\, and epidemiologic methods. Dr. Fox works on ways to improve retention in HIV-care programs in South Africa from the time of testing HIV-positive through long-term treatment. As part of this work\, he is involved in analyses to assess the impact of changes in South Africa’s National Treatment Guidelines for HIV. Dr. Fox also does research on quantitative bias analysis and co-authored a book on these methods\, Applying Quantitative Bias Analysis to Epidemiologic Data. He is also the host of a public health journal club podcast called Free Associations designed to help people stay current in the public health literature and think critically about the quality of research studies and a podcast on Epidemiologic Methods called SERious Epi. DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMental Health in America: New Directions for Care and Connection\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, November 4th for the Department of Epidemiology seminar series featuring Dr. Karen Emmons. \n\n\n\nAbstract: This talk will provide an overview of the field of implementation science\, with a particular focus on its potential intersections with epidemiology. A major point will be that it is critical to understand implementation science in order to maximize the likelihood that epidemiologic findings will translate into improved health. Participants should emerge with a better understanding of implementation science and how it can be useful to epidemiologists.  \n\n\n\nBio: Karen Emmons is a Professor of Social and Behavioral Science at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She has expertise in cancer disparities and in implementation science.  Her work focuses on community-engaged approaches to implementation of cancer prevention and early detection interventions in settings that serve low income and disadvantaged communities. She has more than 375 peer-reviewed publications and has served as PI for multiple NIH-funded research projects and centers.  She also serves as Faculty Director of the Community Engagement Program for Harvard’s Clinical Translational Science Award\, Harvard Catalyst\, which focuses on advancing evidence-based strategies to improve community health and creating bi-directional relationships between community partners and researchers. She serves as the MPI of Harvard Chan’s T32 training grant in cancer prevention and control and has received multiple mentoring awards.  Her research has also been recognized by honors including the Morse Distinguished Researcher Award\, Outstanding Senior Cancer Scientist Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine\, and Outstanding Scientist Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine. Lunch provided.  \n\n\n\n\nRSVP TODAY\n\n\n\n\nSeries Theme\n\n\n\nThis seminar series will explore the role of trust in promoting psychological\, physical\, and social well-being. At a time of declining trust in institutions\, political polarization\, fear-based public discourse\, and rapidly changing technologies that shape how people encounter information and one another\, the series will consider trust not only as an individual experience but also as a central feature of collective well-being. Through conversations with leading scholars and practitioners\, we will examine how trust is defined and measured across diverse social and cultural contexts; how it functions across relationships\, communities\, institutions\, and generations; and how it is built\, maintained\, broken\, and repaired. \n\n\n\nThe series will also explore how social\, political\, commercial\, and cultural factors shape trust\, with particular attention to health equity and the histories of exclusion\, discrimination\, disinvestment\, and institutional harm that influence whether communities feel able to trust systems. Together\, we will consider how trust and trustworthiness can promote safety\, belonging\, resilience\, civic participation\, health-promoting behaviors\, and flourishing while helping to build more connected\, equitable\, and resilient communities and systems. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biography\n\n\n\nDr. David Bersoff is the Head of Research for the Edelman Trust Institute\, Edelman’s think tank dedicated to advancing the study of trust in society. As the Institute’s Chief Trust Scientist\, Dr. Bersoff is responsible for ensuring the quality\, integrity\, and scientific value of all of Edelman’s trust-oriented research\, which includes the annual Trust Barometer\, the biggest and longest running global study of institutional trust\, as well as yearly topical studies examining issues such as climate change\, trust in the healthcare system\, trust in the workplace\, trust in brands\, and racial justice. He also oversees all of the Trust Institute’s external research projects done in partnership with other academic\, social policy\, and philanthropic institutions. \n\n\n\nPrior to joining Edelman in 2016\, Dr. Bersoff spent 17 years as a consumer insights and marketing strategy consultant at The Futures Company (nee Yankelovich). In his last 5 years with the organization\, he served as its Chief Insights Officer and was a member of its global board of directors. In that role\, he ran the Global Insights Group and drove the research\, data analysis\, IP creation and product development strategy for all of their syndicated consumer insights offers. To celebrate this\, we welcome you to join the Annual HCC Celebration of Early Investigators in Cancer Research. This symposium will showcase the talent of early career investigators at the Harvard Cancer Consortium (HCC) who work in several areas of population science\, including epidemiology\, biostatistics\, outcomes\, diversity\, and survivorship. We invite all members of the public to attend the event. We also invite students\, post-docs\, residents\, and clinical fellows to submit abstracts for consideration as oral or poster presentations by September 18th. DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMental Health in America: New Directions for Care and Connection\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n21st Annual Stare-Hegsted Lecture\n\n\n\nValter Longo\, PhD\, Edna Jones Professor in Biological Sciences and Gerontology at USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology will serve as the distinguished speaker for the 21st Annual Stare-Hegsted Lecture. \n\n\n\nLecture Overview: Based on the discovery by his laboratory of the role of the Tor-S6k pathway in accelerating aging and diseases\, the Longo lab developed the Fasting mimicking Diet (FMD)\, a periodic intervention that activates stem cells\, cellular reprogramming and autophagy to extend longevity and reverse diseases in rodents. In over 40 clinical trials\, five-day FMD cycles resulted in the reduction of biological age and regression of multiple diseases.  \n\n\n\nThis annual lecture honors Drs. Fredrick Stare and Mark Hegsted\, who were the founders of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 1942\, which was the first department of nutrition in any medical center or school of public health in the U.S. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n		\n\n	\n		\n						\n							Valter Longo\, PhD						\n					\n				Valter Longo\, PhD\, is the Edna Jones Professor in Biological Sciences and Gerontology at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology\, one of the oldest and leading centers for aging research. Are you running out of room in your email? Save yourself and your office time and money by learning to manage your electronic records. In this workshop\, we’ll help you manage your email and electronic records efficiently and effectively by giving you guidelines for: \n\n\n\n\nNaming and organizing your files for fast and easy access\n\n\n\nDeveloping a file plan for your office shared drive\n\n\n\nDetermining which emails you should keep\, and how to store them\n\n\n\nLearning how to keep your digital records in compliance with Harvard’s records management policies\n\n\n\n\nWorkshops are about 45 minutes long. Attendance is free and open to all members of the Harvard Medical School\, Harvard School of Dental Medicine\, and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health communities. When conducting research for clinical and regulatory purposes\, the causal estimand typically involves the causal effect of an intervention. Three frameworks have been proposed to describe the causal estimand in randomized trials and observational studies: PICO\, the target trial framework\, and the E9 (R1) Addendum of the International Council for Harmonisation (ICH). This talks provides a side-by-side comparison of these three estimand frameworks for causal inference\, translate across their terminologies\, and highlight their commonalities and peculiarities. For decision makers who ask causal questions\, the target trial framework subsumes the other two frameworks by providing the most flexibility and level of detail. \n\n\n\nBio: Miguel Hernán is the Director of CAUSALab\, the Kolokotrones Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health\, and faculty at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. His team repurposes real world data into actionable evidence for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases\, cancer\, cardiovascular disease\, and mental illness.
