Rader’s research focuses on leveraging digital technologies and data to improve public health and has appeared in JAMA\, The New England Journal of Medicine\, The Economist\, U.S. Presidential Addresses\, and Supreme Court amicus briefs. He has helped advise numerous government agencies\, including the Centers for Disease Control and Department of Defense\, and previously resided with his family in Berlin\, Germany\, while serving as an AI advisor to the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence. Come in-person to discuss research interests\, career plans\, and funding opportunities. RSVP here! \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker\n\n\n\nRachel Morello-Frosch\, PhD\, MPH\, is an environmental health scientist\, epidemiologist\, and professor at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health and Department of Environmental Science\, Policy and Management. For over 25 years\, her research has examined structural determinants of environmental health and how co-exposures to chemical and non-chemical stressors impact health. Much of her work has examined this question in the context of exposures to ambient air pollution\, drinking water contaminants\, endocrine disrupting chemicals\, extreme weather\, and effects on perinatal and developmental outcomes. This year marks the 55th anniversary of the First World Roma Congress\, a historic gathering at which Roma Day\, the Romani flag\, and the anthem “Gelem\, Gelem” were adopted as key symbols of the global Roma diaspora. \n\n\n\nAcross regions\, neighborhoods\, organizations\, and institutions use this anniversary to highlight Romani heritage through concerts\, exhibitions\, film screenings\, conferences\, and media events. Many leaders and scholars also observe Roma Day with commemorations that honor victims of anti-Roma racism and reflect on progress in social\, political\, cultural\, and economic life. \n\n\n\nSince 2013\, the annual Harvard Roma Conference has provided a forum to examine and address anti-Roma racism—its origins\, history\, drivers\, protectors\, and global manifestations\, with particular attention to children and youth. The conference has worked to strengthen data collection on Roma (especially youth and children)\, improve research methods\, promote participatory action research with Romani youth\, and critically revisit histories\, policies\, and practices affecting Romani communities. A central goal has been to amplify and center Romani voices and experiences in global scholarship. \n\n\n\nOn April 10\, 2026\, the 14th Harvard Roma Conference\, Mapping Romani Futures: Connected Local Histories and Global Realities\, will once again mark Roma Day. Yet little is known about where awe emerges in marginalized urban contexts\, who can access it\, and how it might disrupt structural inequality. This seminar asks: What would it take for us to be more honest with the lives we are living\, living on\, stepping over\, and forgetting? \n\n\n\nDrawing from the first year of a three-year youth participatory action research project with 20 Black and Brown high school students in Boston\, this work explores how youth make sense of\, complicate\, experience\, locate\, and mobilize awe. Through an after-school awe and flourishing literacy program\, students embarked on awe excursions\, documented their insights\, and designed awe-inspiring spaces. This project cultivates healing\, civic engagement\, and bold visions for communal health equity. Together\, we will consider how “actionable awe” can transform “awe-ful” spaces into “awe-inspiring” ones and illuminate new pathways for collective flourishing. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biography\n\n\n\nDr. Demond M. Hill is an Assistant Professor of Health Equity at Tufts University in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development. His research\, grounded in transdisciplinary\, critical\, applied\, humanizing-based approaches\, focuses on the mental health and well-being of marginalized children\, youth\, and their families\, with a particular emphasis on Black populations. Dr. Hill collaborates with communities to promote and protect opportunities for awe\, belonging\, and human flourishing among Black and Brown communities within systemic inequality. Indeed\, the greatest burden of disease in the first 2 decades of life is related to mental health. This presents a great opportunity: Effective care for these diseases in childhood has the potential to mitigate and forestall later psychopathology (i.e.\, treatment as prevention). This talk will use data from a 30+ year psychiatric epidemiological study to demonstrate the ways in which this opportunity is often squandered contributing to misery\, morbidity\, and mortality in adulthood.  \n\n\n\nBio: Dr. Copeland is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont and the Thomas M Achenbach Chair in Developmental Psychopathology. He was trained as a clinical psychologist at the University of Vermont and then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in psychiatric epidemiology at Duke University Medical Center. He is the principal investigator of the prospective\, longitudinal Great Smoky Mountains Study has been following 1420 participants in rural Appalachia for over 30 years to understand the long-term consequences of early adverse experiences and the development of mental illness. His research program has focused on understanding the developmental epidemiology of emotional and behavior problems across the lifespan. This work includes understanding the interplay between early adverse experiences and genetic vulnerability with other individual\, family\, and contextual characteristics.   \n\n\n\nHis research has been supported by NIMH\, NIDA\, NICHD\, NIA\, and the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation. This program of research has led to over 180 peer-reviewed manuscripts including publications in JAMA\, JAMA: Psychiatry\, the American Journal of Psychiatry\, Lancet Psychiatry\, American Journal of Public Health\, Molecular Psychiatry\, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Nature Communications. His work has been covered in such national news outlets as Slate\, the New York Times\, TIME magazine and CNN. Dr. Copeland was named on the Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher list in 2017\, 2019\, 2020\, 2021\, 2022\, 2023\, and 2024.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n		\n\n	\n		\n							Bill Copeland\, PhD					\n				Mortality Statistics and Research Team\, Statistical Analysis and Surveillance Branch\, Division of Vital Statisti Thomas M. DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBlood Drive – Harvard Chan Community Day of Service\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	From Around the School\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the Center for Health Decision Science for a seminar with Christopher Jackson from the University of Cambridge\, UK\, titled\, “Making Semi-Markov Multistate Models for Intermittent Observations Easily Usable.” Multi-state models for changes in a state (e.g. of health or illness) often assume that the transition rate is constant with time spent in the state (the “Markov” assumption). In this seminar\, Jackson proposes a new method and software package to relax this often-unrealistic assumption\, using hidden states known as “phases.” This is motivated by applications such as modelling the duration of infections\, modelling time in a detectable state in cancer screening\, and modelling cognitive impairment in studies of ageing. \n\n\n\nChristopher Jackson is a Senior Statistician at the MRC Biostatistics Unit\, University of Cambridge. His research involves incorporating statistical methods in models to combine evidence to inform population health policy. His publications cover Bayesian evidence synthesis\, survival analysis\, multi-state modelling\, longitudinal data\, decision theory\, and model comparison. Historically\, research has focused on congenital malformations—paradigmatic harms in the shadow of the thalidomide catastrophe—but other unintended drug effects are equally important and pose distinct methodological challenges. This seminar will examine what we have learned about studying outcomes such as nonlive births and longterm neurodevelopment in children\, highlighting study design challenges\, potential biases\, and data issues that shape inferences about psychotropic medication safety in pregnancy.  \n\n\n\nBio: Krista Huybrechts is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Harvard Medical School and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She co-founded and co-directs the Harvard Program on Perinatal and Pediatric Pharmacoepidemiology (H4P). MPHAbstract: Over 30 years ago\, in 1993\, a groundbreaking analysis of the US National Polyp Study was published\, which suggested that colonoscopic removal of colorectal polyps was associated with an 88% reduction of colorectal cancer incidence. Since then\, numerous observational studies and randomized trials have confirmed effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening\, even though most of them substantially underestimated screening effects for various reasons. Large heterogeneity in introduction of and adherence to screening programs across countries in the last three decades is mirrored in large heterogeneity of trends in colorectal cancer incidence and mortality. Modelling studies based on the accumulated evidence confirm that the vast majority of the approximately one million colorectal cancer deaths per year globally could be prevented by screening. 1:35PMControversies and Innovations in Screening for Prostate Cancer Lorelei Mucci\, ScD    Abstract: More than 1.6 million men across the globe are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually\, and it is the leading cause of cancer death in more than 50 countries. In randomized controlled trials\, screening with prostate specific antigen (PSA) has been shown to reduce cancer mortality over two decades. However\, PSA screening also has led to overdiagnosis of prostate cancers that have a low potential for metastasis and concomitant overtreatment of patients. What has ensued over the past two decades has been an active debate about the harms and benefits of screening\, guidelines that are often in conflict with one another\, and in the United States\, a substantial reduction in prostate cancer screening that is now tied to an uptake in incidence of metastatic prostate cancer. This talk will provide an overview of the history of PSA screening\, the evidence around risks and harms\, the controversies\, and recent innovations in approaches to accelerate a risk stratified approach to screening. 2:05PM       Diagnostics\, Screening\, and Surveillance in Pandemics Marc Lipsitch\, DPhilAbstract: This talk will describe challenges and opportunities for surveillance during large infectious disease events\, with lessons from COVID-19 and earlier pandemics.
