Chan School of Public Health and supported by the Danone Institute North America (DINA). The inaugural Healthy Aging Symposium will be held October 9\, 2026\, at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center in the Veritas Science Center. The symposium will showcase cross-disciplinary excellence in healthy aging research\, spanning biological sciences\, social sciences\, nutrition\, environmental health\, epidemiology and policy. This event is free and open to students\, researchers\, community stakeholders\, and industry professionals from the Boston/Cambridge innovation ecosystem. Registration priority will be given to Harvard students and faculty\, depending on numbers. The symposium will be a full day event\, in-person only\, with talks from experts in the field\, panel discussions\, and time for rising stars and trainees to show how their work fits into the rapidly growing science of healthy aging. We will provide coffee and a continental breakfast\, boxed lunches\, and there will be an evening wine & cheese reception to close out the day. If you are interested in attending\, please fill out the registration form\, and we will reach out closer to the date with more details. If you have questions\, please contact Kelsey Hunt (khunt@hsph.harvard.edu). \n\n\n\nSymposium Agenda\n\n\n\nHealthy Aging Symposium AgendaDownload\n\n\n\n\n\n9:00-9:30am\n\n\n\n9:30-10:00am\n\n\n\n10:00-11:00am\n\n\n\n\n\nCoffee & Pastries\n\n\n\nWelcome & Opening Remarks\n\n\n\nKeynote Speaker\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n \n Daniel Promislow \n \n Senior Scientist and Scientific Advisor\, Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging\, Tufts University \n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:00-11:15am\n\n\n\n\n\nBreak\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:15am-12:05pm\n\n\n\n\n\nNutrition and Healthy Aging\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n \n Frank B. SUMMARY:Occupational Safety & Health Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Home / 404\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOccupational & Environmental Medicine Grand Rounds\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n	Lectures/Seminars/Forums\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Register Today	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Department of Environmental Health and the Harvard Chan Education and Research Center for Occupational Safety and Health invite you to the next Occupational and Environmental Health Friday Seminar on Friday\, October 9\, at 1:10-1:50. \n\n\n\nTitle: Catching the Flu Virus in the Air with a Controlled Human Infection Model \n\n\n\nPresenter: Dr. Linsey Marr\, University Distinguished Professor and the Charles P. Lunsford Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, Virginia Tech. \n\n\n\nLocation: 502 Kresge or Zoom \n\n\n\nRegister: Register here to attend via Zoom.  \n\n\n\nAbstract: Influenza human challenge models\, in which participants are voluntarily infected with the virus\, provide a unique opportunity to explore aspects of influenza disease and transmission. Traditionally\, these models have used intranasal inoculation for safety and reproducibility\, although this route does not mimic natural infection. We revisited inoculation with aerosolized virus\, which may better mimic natural infection\, and found an attack rate of 75%\, compared to 85% for intranasal inoculation. Symptoms and viral kinetics were similar between the two routes of exposure. To improve understanding of the potential for forward transmission of influenza\, we characterized virus in exhaled breath using a Modular Influenza Sampling Tunnel (MIST)\, a 3-foot long chamber that allows for deposition of large droplets on cell culture plates and sampling of aerosols at the far end of the tunnel. Participants expelled infectious virus into the air on multiple days post-inoculation. The extent of infectious virus production varied by three orders of magnitude among individuals and was higher during coughing and sneezing compared to speaking. Furthermore\, we observed a positive correlation between the total volume of expelled larger droplets and the amount of infectious virus detected. Shedding in respiratory particles correlated with viral load in saliva and nasopharyngeal swabs and with clinical symptoms. Our studies highlight both the power and limitations of controlled human infection model studies and provide an opportunity to explore the complexity of virus expulsion and transmission parameters in a relevant system. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Linsey Marr \n Charles P.
