Program Overview

The Science of Learning Meets the Art of Teaching

Teaching is a powerful tool that can be a transformative agent, promoting social changes when used correctly. To learn how to teach, however, you first must understand how people learn. Transforming Health Care Education: The Science of Learning and Art of Teaching will show how both these abilities intersect—with neuroscience, motivation, and technology—enabling participants to become more effective teachers in the health care field.

Transforming Health Care Education: The Science of Learning and Art of Teaching will introduce you to theoretical aspects of learning and the principles of effective teaching, focusing on novel methods to enhance long-term retention and learning. From understanding the basics of neuroplasticity, to the preparation for a Socratic discussion, this 12-week program will enhance your teaching effectiveness.

In addition to the challenges mentioned, we have observed a significant change in student engagement and attention span, likely influenced by the pervasive impact of the digital world and social media. Today’s students navigate a constant stream of information and distractions, making it increasingly difficult to capture and retain their attention during traditional educational activities. It is crucial to understand how these shifts in behavior affect learning processes and outcomes. This program will also examine the effects of digital and social media influences on students so we can develop more effective educational strategies and interventions.

You will also have the opportunity to apply your knowledge to real-world projects. In the end, participants will develop their own educational initiative, which could be a course, app, systematic review, or a master’s or PhD project. Several alumni have implemented their course projects within their practice to great success.

This program is developed and taught by Dr. Felipe Fregni, a renowned neuroscientist and educator. Leveraging his experience teaching clinical research to over 5,000 clinicians worldwide, Dr. Fregni has crafted this innovative course to transform education in health care. In addition to teaching, he leads a neuroscience laboratory, the Spaulding Neuromodulation Laboratory (in the Department of Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School), and has received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from the U.S. government.

“It was a wonderful experience! In my opinion, a dynamic learning strategy, together with interesting materials, insightful conversations, and enriching lectures, are the key elements that make this course unique, allowing us to carefully analyze the topics, fully understand how we learn, and develop critical thinking. It has also given me many great teaching strategies to apply in my field. I also had the chance to interact with colleagues from around the globe and share knowledge and experiences. So it´s totally worth it and highly recommended!”

—Julia Minetoo, MD, Transplant Team, Garraham Hospital

“Taking the TLI course with Professor Felipe Fregni has been a transformative experience for my career. I always believed that the skills to give great presentations were something you were born with, but this course has shown me that anyone can learn to deliver outstanding lectures. […] Since completing the course, I’ve noticed a remarkable shift in my lectures. They are no longer just presentations; they are dynamic interactions where students are engaged, asking questions, and truly invested in the material. The feedback from my audience has been overwhelmingly positive—they’re excited to learn, and I owe much of that to the insights I gained from this course. […] I wholeheartedly recommend the TLI course to anyone looking to enhance their teaching skills. It’s an investment that pays off in immeasurable ways, and I am incredibly grateful for the knowledge and support I received.”

—Siham Shweiki, MPH, BSC, Deputy District Pharmacist, Ministry of Health

“Participating in the Teaching, Learning and Innovation (TLI) program has been a turning point in my academic career. It’s beautiful to understand and value the different approaches to teaching (and learning) that actually make a difference in students. As a teacher I better understand the neurobiological pathways involved in long-term learning and I can apply these concepts in my strategy with students. Putting the effort into what is demonstrated to work is wonderful. It´s been enlightening to look at teaching from another angle and realize that purpose and meaning are crucial if we truly want to have an impact in students. Program Overview

Navigating Complex Responsibilities: Role of Chairs in Clinical Departments

Chairs of major clinical departments traditionally have faced complex responsibilities because of their multiple tasks—patient care, teaching, research, and administration.

As academic health centers experience unprecedented disruption and change as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, chairs are being asked to become more extensively involved in institutional decision making with regard to programs, staffing, operating and capital budgets, and other issues. These responsibilities are in addition to their traditional concerns within their own departments. At the same time, chairs have to consider to a greater degree the relationship between institutional priorities, departmental decisions, and collaboration with other services. These new tasks call for new leadership and managerial skills.

The Program for Chairs of Clinical Services (PCCS) brings together chairs of major clinical departments in teaching hospitals and health systems and an experienced interdisciplinary faculty for two weeks of intensive and systematic study of some of the critical leadership and management issues facing chairs, their departments, and teaching hospitals.

Curriculum

The program curriculum is organized around the following interrelated courses taught by a faculty experienced in executive education for physicians and other key decision-makers in the health system:

  1. Competitive Strategy
  2. Health Policy
  3. Financial Analysis and Control
  4. Innovative Problem Solving
  5. Operations Management
  6. Organizational Issues
  7. Leadership Challenges

A carefully integrated curriculum permits participants to examine fundamental managerial issues from the perspective of several disciplines. A new program initiative or downsizing proposal, for example, may raise managerial problems concerning departmental and institutional strategy; the application and utility of systems analysis and quantitative analytical methods; basic economic trends and legal constraints; financial analysis and control; and organizational behavior, design, and development.

The overriding purpose for learning concepts, techniques, and skills in any of the management disciplines in this program is to understand their managerial use and limitations. For example, the course in financial analysis and control does not aim to develop expert accountants or to provide accounting skills, per se. The purpose in learning to analyze the cost and financial implications of program decisions, for instance, is: (a) to better understand the fundamental methodological issues involved, the driving factors behind any particular analysis, the limits of such analysis, and the need to blend this with clinical, strategic, and other non-financial judgements; and (b) to improve the ability of a participant both to manage staff and to interact more effectively with the fiscal affairs personnel in their hospital, health system, or medical school.

Objectives & Highlights

The program’s overall objective is to enhance and develop participants’ leadership abilities and effectiveness. This is accomplished by providing broader understanding of their responsibilities as leaders; perspective on some of the critical leadership and management issues they face; and understanding and awareness of concepts and techniques relevant to management.

Upon completion of the program, participants will have gained:

  • Increased understanding of their responsibilities and tasks as leaders of clinical departments and members of the leadership group of their institution
  • A broader appreciation of and insight into the external challenges facing, and changes occurring in, academic medical centers; the range of options and responses available; and the implications for their own institution, clinical service, and academic program
  • New perspectives on issues they face currently and on those which arise in the future
  • Knowledge of relevant concepts and techniques in several key management disciplines
  • New methods to analyze problems and an enhanced capacity to identify the critical questions
  • Greater effectiveness as departmental and institutional leaders in formulating and implementing new initiatives and managing change

Innovative Case-Based Learning: Mastering Leadership Through the Case Method

The principal method of instruction in the program is the case method, a technique pioneered and refined at Harvard Business School. Most of the cases present actual problem situations familiar to chairs of clinical departments. Special case materials based on field studies of specific issues faced by service chairs have been and continue to be prepared by the faculty.

The case method confronts the participant with an actual management problem, halted at a point where decisions must be made, and forces the participant to choose a course of action. Participants go through a three-step study process. First, participants study each case independently. Participants then meet in small discussion groups to test their individual analyses against those of their peers. Finally, the entire class discusses the case, with the professor as catalyst and guide. The professor points out considerations the class has overlooked; elicits from participants the lessons of experience; pursues each line of investigation to its conclusion; and finally, summarizes the discussion and draws out the major lessons it has taught.

Assigned readings and guest lecturers supplement and augment the use of cases. In addition, an important part of the learning process occurs during the informal exchange of insights and experience among participants and faculty.

Classes and discussion groups are scheduled six days a week. Preparation for classes averages six hours a day. Registration is scheduled for 3-4 pm on the first day of the program. The following Sunday is free except for cases to be prepared for Monday’s classes. Participants are required to free themselves of professional and family responsibilities for the period of the program so that full attention can be devoted to the educational experience.

This program drives meaningful growth in project leadership abilities for clinicians, administrators and operations professionals in health care settings. It covers project leadership, assessment, planning, initiation, execution, quality control, team-building, management, conflict resolution and communication with stakeholders.

Program Overview

In health care, clinical and administrative staff with no formal training in project management often end up leading project teams. These individuals may be subject matter experts, but likely have only a passing knowledge of the science of improvement. To move from ideas to results, these project leaders need formal training in project management.

This course provides the training health care professionals need to improve the quality of care at their organization through projects delivered on time and within budget. From setting the foundation and planning, to execution and close out, you will study each step of managing a project in detail.

You will learn the necessary tools and strategies to effectively manage projects in health care organizations of any size or specialty. In just a few days, participants will greatly improve their ability to provide focused and strategic leadership to their current and future projects.

The program uses experiential activities and case studies to weave together the topics of project management, creating and managing teams, delegation, motivation, conflict resolution, and negotiation to generate maximum results.

This is the course to take to master the “people side” of project management.

Health Care Project Management develops both the project management skills needed to improve health care delivery and also the people management skills to create an effective project management environment in a time of crisis or calm.

Participants explore the topics of creating and managing teams, delegation, motivation, conflict resolution, and negotiation in order to more effectively engage stakeholders and build support for project outcomes. Leading Harvard faculty will layer technical project management skills on top of these topics to ensure you return to work with the highest level of project effectiveness.

The sessions’ dynamic model is designed to provoke discussion, build foundational skills, and initiate practical ways to apply lessons learned.

By participating in this program, physicians from around the world will develop skills to be more effective and efficient institutional leaders.

Program Overview

Physicians are often selected for senior leadership positions based on clinical expertise. No matter the setting, these expanded roles require knowledge of critical management skills and leadership practices, which are not typically part of physician training.

This executive education program brings together a peer group of physician leaders from a variety of health care settings around the world who face similar challenges. Harvard experts and industry leaders provide focused leadership and management training, ensuring participants are prepared to direct change and drive value within their organizations and communities.

During this highly interactive course, participants will engage with each other and expert faculty in small groups, experiential activities, and full-class discussions, allowing for an open exchange of ideas to address the challenges inherent in creating a healthy population, quality health care, and maintaining cost effectiveness.

As a participant in this program, you will:

  • Develop a deeper awareness of your own leadership strengths and development opportunities
  • Enhance your strategy, negotiation, conflict management, peer and team management and other key leadership skills
  • Expand your understanding of responsibilities and options as a manager of a  clinical department, service, or program and as a senior institutional leader
  • Learn strategies and tactics to lower costs and improve operations while increasing quality and safety
  • Advance knowledge and skills in the art and science of improvement, allowing each participant the opportunity to immediately apply the skills they learn to a selected improvement project during the program
  • Visit and engage with change agents in high performing health care delivery organizations in the greater Boston area
  • All while innovating and developing new and better ways of delivering care to meet the needs of patients and employees

You will also have the opportunity to learn from the Harvard case-based style of learning, which provides a deep understanding of how leadership concepts apply to everyday situations in settings around the world.

As part of the program, each participant will identify and develop a plan for an improvement project connected to her or his organization’s business plan. Each participant will identify a key area of change prior to the start of the program, submit the idea to faculty for review, and actively work on the project during the program and beyond.

The improvement project may be in any one of three categories:

  • Improving quality of care and services
  • Reducing costs while maintaining or improving quality
  • Expanding patient or customer satisfaction with the development of new services or innovative ways of providing existing services

Throughout the program you will work with faculty and participant colleagues to refine and further develop your project, so that you can implement the project when you return home. Whether you work at a public health delivery site, a government agency, or another setting, this collaboration will enable you to move forward with an actionable plan to improve performance.

The design of this program allows participants to achieve results by immediately applying the skills they learn to everyday work experiences.
